Buyer wants to return item over 30 days old

Buyer purchased an item back on August 5, it was delivered to buyer on August 11.

Then on morning of September 11, buyer opened a return case. I received an email from eBay that my funds are also on hold.

Why is that? Between August 11 (delivered date) to September 11 is actually 31 days.

I have no obligation to accept the return right because it’s past 30 days but why does eBay have my funds on hold for this?

Re: Buyer wants to return item over 30 days old

Unfortunately it's a way of life not only on eBay but for every merchant, ecommerce business.. that accepts credit cards as a form of payment. EBay will be the first to tell you that they sell nothing but are simply an conduit between the buyer and seller. If eBay was not in the middle and you had sold directly to a customer who paid with a credit card the same situation would apply. Not defending eBay by any means but there is some fallacy to the term Managed Payments. The chargeback issue is something I am assuming eBay never factored into the MP equation or maybe they did since they get to keep their fees regardless of who wins the charge back.

While CC Companies claim to monitor the number and frequency of charge backs scammers simply close out CC's on occasion and get a new one just like they do with their scammer eBay accounts.

Yep same here. The difference was PayPal and eBay were connected and PayPal did a lot better job reviewing and scrutinizing charge backs. Under MP neither eBay or Adyen have any skin in the game and really don't care or at least they are powerless to do anything about it.

Looks like others have already provided good answers to your question. The days of eBay and PayPal doing due diligence on charge backs are gone. Under MP there is little to no investigation. The CC Company is 100% in charge of the decision and do not care about nor do they want to get into any logistics related to the return of the item.

If I was in your shoes I would accept the return and issue a full refund upon receipt of the returned item.

Re: Buyer wants to return item over 30 days old

Under the eBay Money Back Guarantee(EMBG) a Buyer has 30 days from the time the item arrives to open a return on eBay if there is anything wrong with the item.

If they open a case after the 30 days, the Seller normally has the option to decline it however Buyers also have 6 Months protection with PayPal so they may open a dispute on there instead.

A good Seller will accept the return, get the item back and refund the Buyer, normally you are given 2 business days to issue a refund so you have a little bit of time to inspect the item and see if there was something wrong with it. If it turns out that nothing was wrong with the item and the Seller can prove this, they can report the Buyer to eBay for abusing the return policy and it might even be possible to get youre return postage credited back to you.

Establishing Trust is Better than any Sales Technique..

Re: Buyer wants to return item over 30 days old

So Ebay are clear that returns must be made before 30 days have elapsed, yet PayPal can overrule this? That is rather misleading to say the least. Nowhere in the info to sellers is this suggested. The sanction appears to be the subtraction of said funds after your next sale, ie taken from the proceeds. Another interpretation would be, oh dear, I can't sell on Ebay anymore then....

It should be made clear to sellers that returns can be made over a 6 month period?!!

Not entirely true. It depends on your rating with eBay. eBay completely covers any charge back that comes our way.

Buyer wants to return an item after 58 days saying it stopped working. What should I do?

@n3cards

Ebay offers a 30 day guarantee.  The buyer is past the time frame for returns.  Don't do anything.
