Buyer has asked to send the package to a different name and address than what was initially given. He said to address it to a different name because it is his friend's house. This seems strange to me. Am I protected of I send it?

Nope, you are protected when you send to the name and address shown on eBay, only.
Hope it works out well. If they don't want that, then they can request that you cancel the sale per the buyers request.

Also, the addresses are in the same city.

Are you sure it was the real buyer that asked for the address change? If it was a different user, it is a scam.
Even if the request came from the real buyer, if you ship to a different address you will lose all seller protection. Don't do it.

Thanks grandma! I informed the buyer and hopefully they're legit and will accept the original address.

This is for the $400 watch? Be very careful.

Once you change any aspect of the address on the ebay generated shipping label your no longer covered.
You can offer to cancel the transaction and have them repurchase inputting the new address into the ship to section of payment. You can also cancel simply by selecting 'problem with shipping address'. There is no defect for this. If you aren't in managed payments paypal will keep their transaction fee. MP keeps .30c

No, you will not be protected.
First thing to do is make sure that the buyer is the one that sent
you the message. It's a common scam for people to use your
sold listing to send you a message pretending to be the buyer
and have you ship it were you will regret you did.
But either way if you ship it to a different address you lose.
Never ship to a different address.
You can cancel using issue with buyers address and have them
repurchase it with the correct address.

Never ever EVER ship to an address other than the address listed with E bay.

Make sure you have the money before you ship. If they texted and asked for your Paypal address they'll send a fake notice of payment.

I might be hesitant for a very expensive item but we do this for buyers once in awhile. Never a problem.

I do it also, but I don't sell items that are prone to scams. If this was a $400 watch, no, I would not do it.

You loose what limited seller protection you have if you do this. If this is an expensive item you may want to consider adding a signature requirement when you send it. To many things sound fishy about this.
