Buyer scamming by using a PO box, then not picking up the package.

Ordered on Dec 16, 2021

Available for pickup on Dec 20, 2021

Jan 4, 2022 - PACKAGE RETURN NOTICE GENERATED (but only on ebay - still sitting at post office as of the 7th)

Buyer asks for a refund because the package got sent back - we say we can't do that because they would just go to the post office and pick it up after we refunded.

I even called the post office tonight and verified it was still sitting there.

Told the buyer they could pick it up.

Opens a dispute for item not received.

Closes that and files claim with CC provider.

We dispute, and a couple hours later, closes in their favor and ebay charges us a $20 fee.

Keep in mind, the package is still waiting to be picked up from their PO box behind the counter.

Now the buyer has their money back, and will probably go to the post office tomorrow morning and pick up the item.

Right now, I got my best person contacting ebay to raise H$*@ over this. Not receiving an item shouldn't be because you have a PO box, didn't bother to go get it, and then raise a dispute, win, and still get to keep the item due to differences in tracking messages.

Agreed.  This is a PO issue.  Once the item is delivered to the PO box, it should say delivered and awaiting pick up.  It WAS delivered.

I'm sorry to say but you would've won the eBay case had they not closed it, however buyers are learning  fast if they go through their card co they always win. eBay can't protect you from a chargeback.

The second they filed the chargeback why didn't you do USPS package Intercept and get the package returned to you? You still might be able to do that.

For sure I would file mail fraud with USPS if they pick up the package after getting a refund for not received.

...can you call back that USPS facility and ask them to return your package, don't let that person picking it up...providing them this whole true story...

...unless it was Express Mail, otherwise that package should be in transit back to sender at this very moment...

"Once the item is delivered to the PO box,". It was too large to fit in it, so a notice was just left to pick it up at the counter.

Also, we just got off the phone with ebay. They could see what was going on. They refunded us the dispute amount ($110 or so), and the $20 fee. The buyer can go get the package tomorrow if they want.

Since the CC provider already refunded the buyer, ebay is now going after the buyer to collect the money.

Unsure what the next step is if the package acutally gets returned, but since the buyer is paying for it, they might as well go get it now.

Simple. Once he asked for a refund, first thing you should have done is an intercept on the package and had it returned to you. Once that was approved and it is being returned, you refund the buyer. if it was a scam and he went to the PO, he would get nothing. Ask for the package to be returned to you or you will end up losing everything.

Ebay does not go after buyers to collect money they already have. Unless I am mistaken, that credit card refund will come from your eBay funds. You should ask for the package to be returned to you. If the buyer picks it up, he will get to keep it and there is nothing eBay can do for you.

If the package is returned to the seller because it was Undeliverable:

  • The seller is not required to refund anything because the buyer did not give a useable address.
  • The seller is not required to refund in any case until tracking shows it has been returned to her, which in the case of Undeliverable /return to sender packages can take months.

Glad it worked out the way it should of. Not sure we see any connection of scamming with a PO Box. We prefer PO Boxes since it adds safeguards against scams and fraud. Just like it did for you and eBay reversed their decision in your favor.
