Buyer says package wasn't delivered. Tracking shows it was delivered almost 3 weeks ago.

Hey everyone,

I'm just checking what the correct process is here? I sold an item and tracking shows it was delivered on January 7th (Shipped via FedEx). I got a notification that the buyer has requested a refund today because the package wasn't delivered. Double checked and address and tracking number were all entered correctly on my end. I did reply and asked if he's checked with neighbors or the front office (It's an apartment building), and asked if he's called FedEx yet about it.

It seems really strange to me that someone would wait almost 3 weeks to say they never got it. Has me wondering if I'm being scammed. Am I likely to be responsible for his refund?

One thing that I'm not sure if it would get held against me; in the posting I had offered to ship USPS or UPS, but the rate for FedEx 2 Day was nearly the same price so I opted for that thinking the buyer would appreciate getting his item in 2 days.

Hello, do not do anything yet? Tell him if you ask anyone to take the package for him or something like that. I'm would recommend going to customer service and telling them about your situation, eBay would most likely go on your side and you would most likely win the case as it was mark delivered. After you call/text customer service they would likely close your case within 48 hours or less if your evidence is enough to say that he lying and your right. Just contact the buyer telling him the package was delivered and then just contact customer service and let sort things out. I hope this helps you!

Good advice.  Many years ago I remember having a buyer who contacted me with concerns about an item I had mailed and I politely stated that the tracking showed it arrived several days earlier.  A day later they emailed and said their building manager was holding it, unauthorized btw, in the office.

So there is another twist.  Thousands of people live in apartment buildings and it makes me wonder if apartment dwellers report more "lost" packages or people who live in single family homes.   I'll take a guess that 75% of the missing packages are stolen by kids or adults in apartment buildings.

Yeah agreed. Too much risk with that many people walking by your door all day. Any apartment I've ever lived in allowed you to put the main offices address down and then they would hold the items for you. So I'd either do that or have things shipped to my work.

You are protected by Ebay when you upload the tracking showing the delivered scan. If sellers here had to refund all the INRS with delivery scans showing delivered this would become the SCAM of the century. It is truly the buyers responsibility here to be aware of when their packages are going to be delivered and have a secure place to pick them up. I would just put my tracking number into any case a buyer files and you will be done with this.

A buyer opened a non-delivery case just the other day. First time this has ever happened. I sent her the tracking number which showed her package was delivered on December 31. I called Ebay just to cover myself, and the nice customer service rep closed the case while I was on the phone with him. He said this would in no way affect my account, and that if I would happen to receive any negative feedback from the customer, it would be removed. I have always had good, helpful experiences with Ebay.

As long as you have that delivered scan than you are fine. When your buyer opens an INR case you need to enter the tracking number in the case. That will insure it closes in your favor. It's one of the few seller protections we get from eBay. Nothing else you can do here. Do not contact eBay about this as they may consider that your getting them involved, which will cost you another $20 fee. Just be patient and stay positive this will work out. Best of luck to you....

All you need to do is upload the tracking information to the claim.  eBay will close the claim in your favor.  At this point it's up to the buyer to find out if by chance it was mis-delivered or whatever.  You can call to have eBay close the claim and have them release your funds.

I ordered a vacuum cleaner a few months back.  Watched the tracking t5hrough their app continually through out the day when UPS stated it was out for delivery.   Then I saw at 8:40 p.m via the tracking it was delivered, but no one had come to my door.  Of course no one answers phones at that time of night and from experience I know that if I tried filing a claim with eBay I would lose.  I went ahead an opened an online claim. Fortunately, the next morning my neighbor from two doors down brought  me my vacuum cleaner as they had delivered it to the wrong house.  I still called UPS to complain that their driver had delivered to the wrong house.
