See if you can get them to send that in an EBAY message. Ebay can't see messages left in Paypal - it won't help you there. (You can go into your Paypal settings and turn OFF the message to seller area.)
If not, you'll either have to ship it and take the wrath of the customer, hold it and take the shipping ding, or cancel and take the defect.

I think the defect and sales coming to a halt was a coincidence. I got a defect after an item I had sold somehow automatically relisted and sold again. My sales did not change at all, and I still have that defect on there.

Hmm, I didn't know that, I'll have to check it out!

1 late shipment isn’t going to affect your delivery time.

Some sales are not worth having.
Waiting to ship until next year comes under that category.
Ask the seller if this is a request for a cancellation.
If he agrees, cancel 'at buyer request'.
Or.
Cancel 'at buyer request' then closer to May 12, relist the item as a Fixed Price using his name as the title.
If he doesn't buy, change the title to something more attractive, add him to your Blocked Bidder List and move on.

Myself, I would cancel and refund it.

One of the biggest problems I have noticed with this merging from retail store to online sales is customers who still want that personal touch of service that, if we wish to keep our noses clean, we as sellers simply can not provide.
As well don't get me wrong but I'm also seriously not interested in becoming buddies with my buyers.
There is no question in my mind I don't want to bend over backwards for this, what to me is a simple workaround from the buyer's end.
The other problem and this has bothered me most of my adult life, is that no matter how good a system gets set up there is always that someone who just HAS to buck the system... Play by the rules and there is no problem, once we start making exceptions it is not long before another follows, and then more...
But sales have been so SLOW...
I hate to even think the above could greatly upset this buyer.
Gosh I hate to suggest this next one for sheer fear of all the bugs this could create...
Perhaps one could suggest EBAY institute such a thing, where the buyer pays now but marks delayed shipping box so the seller gets no defect?
