I just sold a laptop to somebody and noticed after the fact that the name on the shipping information is different than the buyers name. Also the buyer marked the item as "payed" but did not pay. This seemed sketchy to me so I did a transaction cancel request and won't fool with the guy unless he decides to actually pay.
Does this happen often? I'm a noob so wasnt sure what to expect. I got a ton of obvious scam offers, which wasnt surprising but went with this one because the guy actually had some seller feedback.

yea thanks. the main thing that sketched me out was that the guy marked "as paid" without paying. he also requested my contact information, which was how i picked up on the fact that his actual name was not the name of the person that I sent the invoice to.
i'll be reporting him and not shipping the laptop.
i had a feeling this would happen. just wanted to sell the item fast haha. oh well.
again thanks to all who proviuded helpful comments and advice.

This is for eBay and not PayPal. Before the item has been paid for, the person in charge of the account must go in and change the full name and address to where he/she wants the item sent. Then the Buyer pays. The shipping label will show the person and address where to send the item. Once the shipping label has been printed, one must go in and change everything back to the address and name that usually buys and receives.
I have done this several times before and called to verify that this was indeed the way things should be handled. For example, you are not covered by Seller Protection if you send out a package without a last name. Must be full name.
Obviously, there are cases where we use our discrection. But on a laptop, phone or high value item, I am going to follow by the book.
And to kiffereil, I am not sure if this has been mentioned. NEVER, EVER if you print a label make any changes to the name or address. Even when asked, ask the buyer to make the changes. It is their responsibility before purchase. And this is a popular way for fraud to occur. I think I have made a change twice but, I knew the consequences and everything turned out all right. One time I was asked to make a simple change and it was a fraudulent attempt. Luckily, I noticed something odd and went with instinct.

@jasperscouture Everything in your first paragraph is incorrect.

thank you for the comments!
I have reported the buyer, opened an unpaid item case, request a cancel (which i shouldnt have done but oh well), and called ebay customer service to have them confirm that an unpaid item case has been opened and that after 4 days my seller fee for the item will be credited back to me (the lady was very polite and helpful)
Pretty sure thats all I can do. Wont be shipping the item either way.
Gotta learn the hard way I suppose lol.

I'm pretty sure that if you started the cancellation process then you can't open an unpaid item claim. And I'm completely sure that an unpaid item doesn't automatically give you back your fees after 4 days -- you have to go back and CLOSE the claim. (Well, unless the case was opened by the Unpaid item Assistant, which isn't what happened here.). I recommend that you go to the resolution center and check up on the status of this transaction and alleged claim. Customer support is very unreliable.

As noted in another post that's not necessary. You can just keep multiple names/addresses on file and pick one during the payment process.

thats actually what i meant yea. i will be checking back and making personally sure that it is taken care of. thank you

No, not later: You should check now.
You will be chargrilled that a cancel transaction blocks an unpaid dispute.

And if the person doesn't change the address or file continued purchases will be sent to same person and address. That was my point. Buyer has option to go in and change address/file back to where ever the heck he/she wants purchases sent.
I am going to refrain from other comments as blood is dripping down my face.

there isnt much to check at the moment but I will be regularly. will make as many phone calls/emails as it takes to take care of it. i am pretty persistant 😉

It doesn't take any phone calls or emails. Go look in the Resolution Center.

@richards*collectionwrote:the part I dont understand is how does the buyer mark the item as paid on your ebay account, I thought only you can do that.
It's a hold over from the day when ebay allowed checks, money orders, cash, etc.
The buyer can mark "payment sent" and noobs fall for it.
Not a hold over, eBay still allows checks and money orders for eBay Motors, Business and Industrial and maybe most important Adult Material. Here's the complete list and consider that this represents tens of thousands of transactions every day.

@jasperscoutureWhat policy says seller protection is null and void if you send out a package without a last name? You say you go "by the book" but I don't think you actually read "the book" because names are not a requirement when it comes to seller protection, not through ebay or paypal.
