I just sold a laptop to somebody and noticed after the fact that the name on the shipping information is different than the buyers name. Also the buyer marked the item as "payed" but did not pay. This seemed sketchy to me so I did a transaction cancel request and won't fool with the guy unless he decides to actually pay.
Does this happen often? I'm a noob so wasnt sure what to expect. I got a ton of obvious scam offers, which wasnt surprising but went with this one because the guy actually had some seller feedback.

You are a new inexperience seller, selling an expensive item ... those are the two biggest things a scammer/theif is looking for.
You must avoid falling for typical scams ... not simply cancel a legitimate purchase.

You should have posted here for advice BEFORE you reacted. Filing a cancellation was foolish; what reason did you choose? You should have waited and filed an unpaid item claim.

Cancel, Cancel, Cancel (It's like the Air Boss yelling; Eject, Eject, Eject)
Do not ship. It a scam.
As a new member of the wonderful world of eBay with no history you are a magnet for scams.
Do not try to sell a laptop, cell phone, a Rolex watch this early in your career here or it will be a short one.
Find other stuff to sell to first establish yourself with several sales and good feedback.
Since I saved you from being scammed, did you want to just send me that laptop. I'll pay the shipping it's more than you'd get from the other guy

haha gotcha. wont be shipping it. already found a buyer that i know personally anyway. thanks for the advice guys.

Yes, I saw that. There is nothing wrong with a buyer shipping to a recipient with a different name. That is done all the time; I send gifts to relatives.
The sketchy part is that the buyer marked it as paid when it actually wasn't. That's why you should have filed an unpaid item claim instead of canceling.

gotcha i just meant thats what i wrote in the box not implying you didnt see it i'll do that too it was just too early to do that yet. should have just waited but i reacted. learned my lesson and will be selling this item locally.

Disagree. The name not matching up can be explained. Marking it as paid when it was not - get rid of this guy ASAP and block before he tries something else to defraud you.
Even if he did pay, I would still wonder if he would pull something else. Not a person you want to deal with.

You are OK with cancelling for the "Address Reason". Two last names were provided. That's against eBay Policy and if you had sent you might not have been covered by Seller Protection.
Don't be hard on yourself, there is a lot to learn!!
It's true, if you ever run into a situation, you can turn here for help. I would call eBay to let them know about the 2 last names. Ask for Trust and Safety. I believe it's called something else now but, they will be able to direct you to the right department.
Report this situation.
Proud of you for using your instinct. Wishing you lots of luck and success in the future!

the part I dont understand is how does the buyer mark the item as paid on your ebay account, I thought only you can do that.

Seller protection requires the seller to ship to the name and address that are attached to the PayPal payment; that doesn't have to be the same as the eBay member's name. There's a "change" link right on the checkout page, where the buyer can change the name and/or address to send the purchase to.
It's a moot point in this case, since there was no actual PayPal payment.

It's a hold over from the day when ebay allowed checks, money orders, cash, etc.
The buyer can mark "payment sent" and noobs fall for it.
