Buyer returned a different item! Help!

Hi ebay Family,

I recently sold my beloved late 2012 retina MacBook Pro and the buyer returned a broken down computer and got a refund! I am absolutely furious with this but so far ebay has been saying that it's my fault that I wasn't careful enough. What do I do?!?!

Thanks fam,

A traumatized seller

Re: Buyer returned a different item! Help!

As a new seller - we would have advised you to never list anything her that you can't afford to lose. We would then have told you not to sell iphones, computers or gaming systems as they are high scam categories and a new seller is ripe for the pickins!

I'm sorry this happened to you but we can see if Ebay won't give a courtesy refund. First file an IC3 report online - https://www.ic3.gov/default.aspx. It's an internet crime report. The go to the USPS and file a fraud report - you should get conirmation numbers of these reports or take screen shots. Then call the police dept in the buyer's area and ask to make out an incident report so that you can file an insurance claim. Take that number from the report.

You are then going to file an appeal with Ebay - put all those numbers in the report and then call Ebay. Ask for Trust and Safety and talk to a US rep. Best time to call is around 10 am PST.

Good luck.

Re: Buyer returned a different item! Help!

I am so sorry.  Unfortunately this is becoming a common occurrence on ebay, especially with Iphones and computers.

And then to make it worse ebay blames you.  Sickening.

I wish I had better news for you.

You could contact the police and the carrier and report it for theft and mail fraud.

Have you checked this person's feedback left for others to see if there have been problems.

Check his name on various lists on the net that are out there to see if he is on a bad buyer's list.

Bur unfortunately, this is not going to end well, and for that I am truly sorry.

All I can say is learn from it, and do not list anything you cannot afford to lose.

And do block that scammer.

Re: Buyer returned a different item! Help!

I'm sorry this happened to you. I have stopped selling Apple products on eBay, it all goes to a list that Craig has. With that being said, if you have your basic information (model number, serial number, MAC address etc.) you might be able to lock it so that it worthless to that buyer.

After that, there is not much you can do. You do know where this person lives though (theoretically). You can file a police report in his home town, sometimes small town police have nothing better to do.

You're helpless on ebay...if you shipped via USPS, open a postal fraud case.

One more for the pile.  How many more of these will be allowed?

Re: Buyer returned a different item! Help!

In addition to the other responders replies.. I hope you have pics of the serial number or at least have them written down so when the police get it - you can ID it. Do not delete your ad for t - print it and save it to a pdf file so you can send it to the FBI (the FC3 thing you were told about).  In the future, if you sell anything high end again, post a pic with the serial number - it is a deterrent to thieves, although not a guarantee you won'y get scammed. Sorry this happened to. Good Luck.

Doesn't have to be shipped by USPS to file a fraud claim. They handle UPS and Fed Ex also.

It will continue until ebay actually has to pay a lot of these claims or loses money on them instead of the seller.

So the answer is .... never.

Re: Buyer returned a different item! Help!

Oh please - this happens on other venues too - Selers have got to educate themselves before selling on any venues - no matter what they are. C list saw more robberies and actual killings because a seller didn't protect themselves before educating themselves about the pitfalls.

Would we like to see this not happen - absolutely - but you have to be mindful of the negative as well as the positives of using venues like these.

OK Griff.  You said there was a way for these to be escalated.  Care to tell this seller how?

Hi @chrysylys, happy to clarify next steps in this situation. A seller would be able to open an appeal if the return has already been decided. We would review the details of the case and while a lot factors can affect the options we have available, providing reimbursement is one of the protections we may be able to offer. While the Return Request is open, a seller would have the option of reporting a different item being returned directly within the case details. I unfortunately do not have a screenshot to share, but look for this within your next return and let us know if you have trouble finding it.
