I have a buyer returning an item that, unfortunately, I didn't realize had an issue because I've never taken it out of the box. It was an honest mistake, lesson learned. I'll take the hit, no sweat, and I approved the return and paid for return shipping. I haven't received it yet, but I noticed the buyer is requesting more money than the original purchase and shipping. When I approve the refund, will I have an option to input an amount? I don't know why this person is asking for more money, but I'm only refunding the purchase and shipping. I paid for the return shipping already. I also had a strange feeling with this buyer initially and should have canceled the order. The buyer opened an account only days before making that final bid, and has 4 positives.

That sure looks like a sales tax addition. Yes, your buyer would want the entire amount - item + shipping cost + taxes. He'll get his full amount back, when you refund. PayPal will refund those taxes.

The buyer doesn't input any "money" amount in a return............how much is it?...... Could be you are seeing the entire amount plus tax that ebay collects?

That's a good question. The amount sold is $152.50, shipping is $12.80 (total: $165.30). The amount of buyer requested refund is $176.46. Does that help?

I think this return will be easy..................you have already done what is required
buyer and sellers can say whatever they feel like in a message but it does not change a return since the message system at ebay is not really a part of the resolution center
when it comes back just hit the refund button and move over the circle so they get the shipping back also.
I get plenty of returns but every single one I have to check off a circle to ensure original shipping is refunded

That's the tax. As dhbookds said, the buyer doesn't "input" any refund amount. It's automatically calculated.
When you were paid the amount the buyer paid included the tax but you never saw it in your account as a net deposit because it doesn't belong to you.
The buyer gets that tax money back.

Looks like everyone is in agreement with the sales tax, so I appreciate the clarification. Thank you all for your input!
