Buyer paid after order was canceled, need help

So I had an item that sold, and after the auction ended the buyer contacts me asking if I can change the shipping method, which I couldn't (and I explained my reasons). 

 

Rather than accepting that, the buyer refused to listen and kept giving me an attitude. I explained that he could either pay or I'll cancel the order no problem. 

 

After about two weeks with no activity, I went ahead and canceled the order. After cancelling, the buyer decided to pay.. which I didn't even know you could do. 

 

I need help. I'll gladly refund the money but I do NOT want to receive negative feedback because of a difficult customer. Is there any way I can go about this?

What reason did you use to cancel with?  I would be more concerned about a defect than feedback.

I put in "buyer wanted to cancel", which seemed like what he wanted, after two weeks of not paying.

To be clear

 

What type of claim did you open?

 

Did the claim actually close or is it still pending

 

If pending, you need to send his item to avoid a defect.

 

If already closed, just send him back his money through his paypal account.

Feedback is probably not blocked, but if the buyer leaves a neg, you can phone eBay, explain the situation, and it will likely be removed.

It was never an open case or anything. 

 

Adter canceling the order I got the email from eBay saying "the order has been successfully canceled. You don't need to do anything else because the buyer hasn't paid for this order yet" which I thought that was the end of that.

Yikes. Rather than cancelling the sale what I would have done was open an UPI case after a couple of days.  That gives the buyer to pay the invoice (with the original shipping cost) and at the amount that he was committed to or let it go unpaid.  If he didn't pay you could have closed the case in 4 days and be done with it.  He wouldn't have been able to leave feedback in that scenario.  

 

If he did choose to pay after the UPI was opened and left you neg feedback you probably could have explained your case and paper trail to ebay and been able to get it removed.

 

Since the buyer did not outright ask you to cancel this sale you technically did not use the correct reason for the cancellation.

Yeah tomorrow I'm just going to try and get in touch with eBay directly and get this sorted out. I've been doing this for over a decade and have never had such a difficult customer. And I work in customer service in real life too and I know this exact type of person. The messages he sent me were so entitled and condescending.

You probably should have gone with the Unpaid Item Dispute.

In addition to blocking any feedback, this would give him a Strike and helps any other seller who has an automatic Block against deadbeats enabled.
