So I listed a Macbook pro as an auction the past week and someone bid a little higher than market price at the last moment, which I thought was a little suspicious. I sent it yesterday but today I woke up to a return claim where the person said, "This guy sent me an iPAD BOX WITH BOOKS inside of it !! THIS IS NOT THE ITEM I ORDERED, I WANT MY FULL REFUND NOW".
Ebay said to accept the return for now and file a false buyer claim after. I am scared because everywhere I am reading that seller do not have a good chance of appealing the refund. What should I do from here? How can I prove to Ebay that I sent a Macbook pro? All I have is photos of the sealed laptop.

That's what the buyer said, but many of us are having a hard time believing that it was actually received by the buyer unless they are local to the seller. Which is why we've all recommended that the seller actually look at the tracking information and see if the package has been delivered and if it hasn't - do a package intercept.
Seller appears to be new and likely not well versed in the various scams, which on the surface this appears to be.

Wow, I feel sorry for the OP.
We have had 2 recently (What I believed to be, but can't say for sure) scammers. One bought a DVD set, "Like new". I bought the set brand new for me, opened it, watched the movies once, did not like them, sold on Ebay .
The buyer upon receiving told me that 3 of the discs were scratched and 2 would not run at all. I told him to take pictures of the numbers in the middle of each disk, to send them to me to compare with the pics we have, and we apologized many times. He never answered.
Wow you buy a like new DVD set for $55, 3 are scratched, 2 don't run, you complain but don't follow suit? Feedback 14.
Looking for a partial refund?
Another bought a new tablet in open box. We inspect everything, it was brand new with the sticker still covering the screen. Received message that it was used, a user name was already in there and it was all set up, and you are a SCAMMER!!! LOL
we apologized and told them to request a return. NO MORE F...... NEWS!!!
Looking for a partial refund????
We never offer partial refunds or tell returning buyers to keep the item unless we know we are wrong. Big apologies, very polite, and please request a return for a full refund.
This ensures that we don't fall prey to the "I WANT A PARTIAL REFUND" scammers.
Even if we lose money on return shipping, it does not matter. Then we block.
If the word goes around with his/her friends that they offered a partial refund because they did in their pants with our phony threats, you are done and expect more.
My experience is, if I get a message trying to scare me "YOU SCAMMED ME", "I AM REPORTING YOU", when they well know that if they request a return, they will get their money back and an opology.
It's always and I mean always at least in my 25 years on Ebay, buyers with less than 40 feedbacks.
We have been scammed once in 25 years.

From OP: <<I sent it yesterday but today I woke up to a return claim >>
It was almost certainly still in the mail stream when OP posted. Hopefully they were able to intercept it.

Hope so. Well worth the $16.50 fee or whatever they are now charging.
What a mess!

Maybe make a video when the package arrives. As the delivery person hands it to you. Ask them to wait while you open it. It’s better than nothing. Also you should have the shipping weight before and after. The weight may be different. I don’t think local police will finger print the content. If they would you wouldn’t be able touch the content.
This happened to me but the moron sent back a box less than half the size and 1/10th the weight. I sent him a message stating I’m filing a theft and mail fraud claim with his local police. He sent the payment back to me.
another claim a buyer swapped the inside content of some radios and sent them back. PayPal had me go to a site where I reported the buyers actions. PayPal gave me the money back. Unfortunately you’re dealing with one way eBay....they only stand behind buyers...

@jaekyle0 : I see you actually had two laptop sales on the same day, one a BuyItNow and one auction. A little off-topic, but just out of curiosity, how did you wind up with not one but two "NEW & SEALED" MacBook Pros?
As for the problem buyer, please give us a little more detail here: Did he request overnight shipping? What does the tracking of your order show right now? Please click the blue Reply button below and give us some more details.
File your package intercept request here: https://www.usps.com/manage/package-intercept.htm

@a_c_green actually AC, you are not off topic, you are spot on. There is something about this sordid tale that smells....

You claim that you mailed it yesterday, and that today you are getting the message from the buyer? Did you mail it with overnight postage? Do you have a receipt for the package? Insured? Did you use eBay to generate the postage? Unless you mailed it with overnight shipping I find it hard to believe your buyer has actually received it. Regardless, I'd report the buyer for a false claim. And, move quickly - eBay gives you about a week to figure it all out before they will get involved & in the buyer's favor. In the meantime, hold the funds representing the sale off to the side in the event you must refund it.

Why would you follow BAD advice? The customer support at eBay is abysmal and they generally have NO idea what they are talking about or how eBay works. As others stated postal intercept is best option or buyer if that is possible, have not heard back from the OP since the initial posting.
There is a SMALL chance that eBay will do anything at all with regards to investigating a buyer and the smarter scammers know how to utilize multiple accounts to avoid detection and/or connection. EBay has and probably will continue to cater to the buyers.

Looks like the OP left the room and took all the fish with him.
Didn't even say "thank you."

Thank you all for the help. The package was indeed sent within one day which was really surprising but the photos he sent with "the fake books" had the same box I had sent. I think I will just take the loss. I did intercept the other package because I realized his account is obviously a scam. Thank you guys for real, I will remember this experience to the grave.

If the tracking doesn't show "delivered" status, try going online to request intercept. Most of time the destination post office will intercept and return the package back to you at some cost.

I didn't realize that both of the IPad's you had posted and sold were scam targets I had assumed it was just one. Glad you recovered at least one of them.

Let the return do it's thing but go file a police report, appeal the case when it's found in buyers favor and upload the police report then contact eBay over phone or on Facebook and tell them you'd be happy to fax/mail etc a copy of it. It's not definite but eBay may courtesy refund you and the buyer OR if will goto high value claims department where they may find it in your favor.
As mentioned above, now you will have to file a 1099 for this even if it's canceled out by a refund. Don't let the buyer of the hook so easily, ask the cops to meet at buyers house. MacBook might magically show up...

Actually I stand by my statement as well as the fact that this has been a published fact.
And I would predict that in 20 years or less, Amazon will be running the USPS.
