I’m a new seller. Just selling stuff from my house I don’t need anymore. I sold a MacBook I don’t use at a very fair price. It was in excellent condition with no scratches. Buyer upon purchase starts hammering me with messages to upgrade the shipping. So I actually shipped it to him with faster shipping than my ad offered. I went out of my way to ship it fast.
anyways, he claims it arrived with a screen nick, which I did not have when I shipped it. Item was listed as used. Buyer wanted a return for refund and I told him I don’t accept returns. In all due respect it’s a used laptop it will have minor wear. Here is a photo of the scratch he alleges, which is very minor. Buyer says he’s going to get ebay involved. Am I okay or what do I do?

No such thing as "no returns". EBAY has money back guarantee (if buyer claims damaged or not as described). You must accept return and give full refund (including return postage). If you refuse to give refund...EBAY will do it automatically (and you will get a defect for no following the rules).

Alas none other than reporting mail fraud to your local police, their local police, and to USPS. Happens all the time which is why even those of us with high ratings avoid selling high priced items on Ebay.

Your opinion of the price being a "steal" means nothing. Your buyer expected to get an item that was as DECRIBED. You failed to describe it properly. You are required to list every flaw. If you don't and the buyer notices it, they rightfully can file an INAD. Most people want whatever it is, in the condition they expect it. Some people (obviously not you) want or keep their things in absolute pristine condition.
If you want to continue to sell here without so many problems, you may want to keep that all in mind. You may also want to avoid selling any items that are high priced, as it's a target for scammers.

Who buys a used laptop and wants it to be pristine? Why even buy used at that point.. A used item is *shock* used. I’m not going to look every item over like a Nazi for the tiniest flaw which doesn’t even matter. I sell a lot of things on another platform and never have this problem. Returning a USED laptop over a tiny tiny tiny nick that i didn’t even notice is hilarious. Also how do I know the buyer didn’t just have buyers remorse and nicked it himself? Sorry I don’t automatically side with the buyer every time like eBay. This sounds like a horrible place to sell things

It doesn't matter who YOU side with. You don't get to make that decision. You gave that right to decide over to eBay, so you have not a leg to stand on.
I don't really care how silly you think the return is. It's valid. You screwed up, and you are going to eat the shipping both ways because of it. I don't care either, how you think your false description was no big deal. Your opinion doesn't matter. The buyer's does. Everything about the MBG is there to keep buyers happy. Otherwise, guys like you would be screwing over buyers.
SO yeah, for someone like you, this is a bad place to sell. Sellers are held to a standard here. You have to deliver on what you say, and then some. You obviously don't want to and that makes you an undesirable seller here. Expect any future sales you make here, to give you nothing but headaches.
If you want to sell like you are having a garage sale, then have a garage sale. You don't get to just act like it, when you are using someone else's house. We may not all agree with every rule, but it's posts like yours, that make it apparent WHY there is a need to have these rules we all must follow.

I really dont think this person is trying to scam you but I would also look for signs that it was tampered with before you refund. Even if you HAVE TO refund, at least say something if things look amiss. I dont agree with the blind refund and be done with it. Its also a 1600 item, so you may have recourse elsewhere if you dont get the same item back.

Yeah and this is also sometimes a horrible place to get advice.

Your a new low volume seller and the buyer is probably taking advantage of you. It will interesting to see what you get back. You might get back their broken one or a book. This is where eBay fails by automatically refunding once tracking shows delivered!
Some people out there expect a filet mignon when they pay the price for a hamburger! No matter what you do, they are never happy!
Probably would have been best to sell locally only. I see so many issues with laptops and cell phones right now on eBay involving fraud.

I think he would have a hard time ripping me off because I posted the box with all the bar codes and specs and if the returned item doesn’t match then he can’t say it’s the same item

Well obviously your buyer did. You said it had no scratches, so your buyer expected no scratches. Sheesh, it's really not a hard concept to grasp, is it?

It did not have any scratches when I shipped it.. I guess you don’t understand that concept

Well that may or may not be:
Users as well as eBay have no idea if it did or did not. Such is the situation with online sales.
This is the why if claimed as not as described eBay finds for the buyer.
As for returning a different item: well the same goes for that: eBay has no idea if it was or was not.
Such is a case for law enforcement not eBay.
You as a seller agree to the buyers guarantee to sell on ebay.
Fun not at all:
Costly yes it can be:
Phones are a high scam on both seller and buyers end.
Hope you have enough info on the original phone if it has been switched to report it stolen to the company that it can be killed as stolen.

Everything is what a person "perceives" it to be to themselves. There is no right and wrong here, there are different opinions mostly based on previous experience. One chooses to follow the advice which resonates most with them....

You don't get it. All the buyer has to do is send you any old book, or rocks, or whatever, in a box and once tracking shows it was delivered back to you Ebay will refund the buyer. Baby Jesus is awaiting your prayers.

Is it weird that the buyer offered to sell it on his end as a resolution?
