Hi All!
I just had an item sold via Buy It Now. The buyer's account was made in February this year and only has 1 positive feedback. Payment was made to my Paypal and I can see the funds. I sent the buyer a message verifying shipping method and I'm awaiting response.
How likely is this a scam? I've gotten a few scam emails prior to the purchase from others. I even just got one after the purchase from another user saying if I got payment and they would like to change address because of family getting sick and had to move out of state.
It seems I can't call eBay or Paypal directly to help verify the buyer but I will send messages to them for best tips. I'm trying to figure out all the extra precautions I can take to prevent a scam as a seller. Do you all have any advice to ensure the sale and buyer is legit?

If funds are in paypal, and ebay shows 'ready to ship- ship it. You are being overly paranoid. Lots of new buyers here all the time, even lots more now that many are home. Why confirm shipping methods? whatever you have set up for shipping is what they get. You should ship it out as normal to the address shown.
Many 'new' buyers do not know they have 'messages' to check, and many more don't get back on to see your message. They search, they buy, they pay, they wait for delivery.

Can you explain what it is that looks like a scam?
Why did you contact buyer?

Since you have only sold one item, the watch, for $425, I can see why you are concerned. Items such as this are high risk items so the sale could go either way. Could be a legit buyer or could be someone out to take advantage.
There is a saying, "don't list anything you can't afford to lose". If this transaction does go south, you may have a big fight on your hands. Hopefully everything will turn out okay.

The buyer having only 1 feedback and such a new account. I forgot to set my buyer preferences to deter this. Plus, all the scammer messages before and after the sale.
I contacted to see if I can get a response. I'd feel more secure with a message exchange. Something about this seems real scammy. The item is high value. I'm looking for as many precautions to take to ensure a legit sale.
I intend on shipping out per my shipping terms, but I'm trying to make sure I can do as much as I can in case there is an issue later.

There are no settings you could have set to stop this sale.

The only way you can guarantee you won't get scammed, is not sell it on the Internet.
You're a new seller, selling an expensive item and that makes you a good target for scammers.
There's no way to tell if the buyer is legit or not, and asking Ebay or Pay Pal about the buyer won't do any good because of privacy reasons.

There is no way to block new buyers.

From other people, right?

There is reason to be concerned, but given what you're saying here, that concern is generalized, rather than specific to this buyer.
The problem is, a scammer will give you the answers you want to hear. A legitimate buyer may not notice your question, or may be wondering what your problem is. Summary: this kind of contact is unlikely to help you block a scammer, and it's somewhat likely to introduce grief into your transaction.

When you sell on ebay, you have to accept that you're taking a risk with every sale. A determined, skilled crook can steal your stuff, and you cannot prevent that. You have to decide before you list it as to whether the risk is acceptable. There's not much you can do once it gets to this point.
There are situations when it might be indicated to just dump the sale and suffer the rather severe consequences, but those situations all involve some hard information about this specific transaction. Usually, communications involving demands.

I appreciate all the responses and advice! I'll be sending the item out on Monday per my shipping terms.
I know there was some kind of setting that prevented buyers with less than 2 positive feedbacks from bidding/purchasing. I've used it on previous sales. I wonder if it was removed.
I contacted the buyer to ensure the listed USPS Priority Mail shipping was ok and that I'll be placing insurance on the item too. I'd feel more comfortable having a message exchange.

You have four big red flags that indicate a likelihood of theft:
I am not an advocate of cancelling sales, but I would say you have VERY HIGH chance of getting scammed. the buyer will end up getting the item and their money back, and there's nothing you can do to prevent it.

Insurance doesn't protect you against a thief ... thieves don't typically communicate.
