Best Offer after a bid is placed

I have a best offer on an item that has been bid on already.  Can I accept the offer? The offer is not by the buy who has the bid.

Did the offer come through the eBay offer system and does it give you an option to accept it?

Or did the buyer simply send a message saying what he would offer you?

Re: Best Offer after a bid is placed

We put items up for auction when we are unsure of the value - which is almost always. That way, if we underprice, buyers might bid it up for us.

One time we listed an item at $200 starting bid. An ebayer messaged us and asked if we would sell it right then for a few hundred more than the starting price. We were tempted, but declined. The item ended up selling for over $2,000.

There's a lesson in there. Somewhere.
