BUYER NEGATIVE FEEDBACK - COMMUNITY SAFETY

As a Seller & Buyer on eBay for many years have been told how Seller feedback is so important to community safety. I think after all this time and having been a victim of ambush feedback it is time that buyers feedback negative and positive be shown. What i mean is the ledger should show how often a buyer leaves negative feedback on sellers. There are increasingly many buyers who are serial negative feedback ( and item return abuse ) providers who do it with impunity because they will not be revealed. If eBay is to be a safe community it should be for ALL !

I think it is time that it should be discussed at least.

Thanks

You are comparing negative feedback with serial killers roaming the streets?

Let me see if I have this straight:  Over the years, you've never checked to see whether or not FB that buyers leave for sellers is published, but felt free to claim that no one can view the negatives that buyers leave for sellers?

OK, then.

To do such you would need to fully know how many transactions they made:  to the feedback left...

Exactly so.  Many, many buyers do not leave feedback when everything is satisfactory.  They leave feedback only when they're unhappy.   So there's no way to know what per cent of transactions they rate negatively.

The only thing I might consider when looking at a buyer's negative feedback left, to see if it could warn me of a problem that might arise, is the nature of the negative feedback.  Is it a simple statement of dissatisfaction and why?  "Book poorly packed for shipping, resulting in bad bump to corner of cover."   That's okay.  Or is it a rant?  "Seller is ugly *bleep* thieving dirty scum who probably kicks puppies and steals candy from toddlers when he isn't *bleep* over his buyers with his *bleep* stinking lies and nasty..."   Not so okay.

I look at what feedback is given by sellers when I encounter such a situation.

If the feedback left be of the cronic neg type , and very little transactions it shows a problem.

If a lot of buying and a small percentage is the negs left it all good usually...

It is one way to check what the OP is looking for.

Yep.  And most of the time, I ignore the whole feeback thing.

Buyer pays.  I ship.

If problems arise, I deal with them when they do.  Who knows what will happen.  Somone who has never negged a seller before might neg me for a good reason or for no reason at all.  Or someone who constantly negs sellers might leave me a glowing positive for a good reason or for no reason at all.

Same with leaving feedback.  Buyer pays.  I ship.  I leave positive feedback.  It's a quick way to say "thank you," just as I would say it in person if I were behind the counter at the brick-and-mortar.  If a problem arises later, I deal with it then.

It actually is very useful for future events.

If you can browse feedback history, you canget an idea if that person is a problem.  If they aren't the problem, you can learn something important about the buuers or sellers they had problems with, and with that info, decide to block a buyer, or avoid certain sellers.  Its called risk assessment and avoidance.

The point is the Seller cannot see the Buyer's feedback until the Buyer buys. So it is useless for over 85% of sales.

The other point is that less than 40% of sales get any feedback, and I suspect most of that is left automatically by sellers. So it is useless for the 60% + of sales that get no feedback.

And eBay does not use feedback to assess member accounts. For that they use Claims and the metrics on your Seller Hub.

More to the point, the only one likely to see that negative flame you leave a rude or sketchy buyer is your future customer. Who is likely to backbutton immediately when they see how you talk about your customers..

Got a problem with a customer? File a Dispute or respond promptly to a Claim or Report the buyer to eBay.

And if you are having problems with more than one percent of your transactions, perhaps the problem is closer to home?

There is a certain protection with this negative feedback and every buyer should know that if they get into a habit of abusing sellers in this way there is a record of every neg they give in their feedback. Certainly if these buyers continue on a rampage of negs they will be found by ebay and by the seller by looking at their verbiage. Even though we sell fixed price we often look at the feedback left for others after the sale and if their feedback really looks bad we WILL cancel the sale, and take a hit with our metrics.

Well I know that ebay probably looks at buyers return behavior and I think they do something when it becomes excessive. They at least I think give them a warning, and then may close their account.

Quoting you:  " I look at what feedback is given by sellers when I encounter such a situation."  Since sellers can only give positive FB to buyers (or none at all), I fail to see how such action would be helpful in any case to any seller.

True.

Certainly if these buyers continue on a rampage of negs they will be found ... by the seller by looking at their verbiage.

Feedback left for others is useful to auctioneers and to sellers who are considering Best Offers, but no other sellers (and that means more than 85% of sellers) have a chance to see buyer feedback.

EBay does not use feedback to assess member accounts.

We have seen Buyers complaining that they have not been allowed to open new Claims. Looking at the FB  those buyers have left (and received) we can make an educated guess that they are no longer covered by the Money Back Guarantee because they have been abusing it.

That doesn't mean they can't continue to buy.

And it doesn't mean they can't use their cc chargeback.

I haven't seen any complaints about warnings but it's not the sort of thing you come to the Boards with. And if the account is closed, they can't come to the Boards anyway-- ummm, I guess they could use a different or new account and who knows how long that would last if they try going public.

Have you been reporting these buyers to Ebay??  That is the first step.  They can't know if we don't tell them.

I've always advised sellers that when they have a problematic buyer to go an look at their FEEDBACK for OTHERS.  That is the real telling part about a buyer.  If you see they have been regularly abusing the FB system, REPORT THEM.  If you don't, I don't know what you expect Ebay to be able to do.

What I have very recently realize is that eBay has no loyalty to its sellers at all.  The buyer is always right no matter how badly some mistreat policy, leave false negative feedbacks, etc. It’s so unfortunate.  After being both a seller and buyer for over 20 years I will no longer sell on eBay for the simple fact that there is no loyalty being shown to the sellers. Why then should eBay receive any profit from my sales.  I don’t think so.

Hard to respond to that without specifics.  IDK what you feel Ebay has done to you.  But whatever it was I wish you the best moving forward.
