i want to list a buy it now item but ebay keeps saying i have to have the start price 40% lower than the buy it now.  i don't want to auction this item.  anyone else had this problem.  it just won't let me list like this even though i have other item for sale this way

The problem is you're trying to create an auction listing with an added buy it now option.

The solution is to change the format from auction to fixed price.

Are you on the app or the website? Can you see the option (above price) where you can switch the format?

What is the item and the value of that item? There could be an issue if your account hasn't been used for years.

weirdly, i keep trying to close off the auction option and just do a buy it now option but the auction option keeps turning back on.  I've done it on the app on my phone and on a computer and i can't list it as a buy it now option.  worked absolutely fine about a week ago

Don't know why that's happening, but I suggest discarding that draft and starting a brand new one. Change the format to fixed price before you enter any details.
