Looking for guidance please. How do I set up a buy one get 50% off the rest in one cart sale in certain categories? Seems like everything is must choose qty max. I want it unlimited after first item in one cart.

With a Coupon or an Order Discount, you can set it to Buy 1 Get 10 at 50% off 

It won't go higher than 10

That has nothing in there that allows you to make it buy one, get the rest 50% off.

You just need to look at the link a little closer.  There are several options, this is one of them.

It is important to look at the options in the drop down menu.  When you visit the first link I gave so all options are seen.

I'm well familiar with the options.  The OP doesn't want Buy One Get One, they want Buy One Get Many, essentially.

This is the key part I think you're misreading: "buy one get 50% off the rest".  That bolded part is something I don't see as an option.

The highlighted item allows for up to 10 additional items.  While limited to 10 additional item, it would likely satisfy the OP's desire to do this.
