Attempting to be charitable, appalled at the runaround I'm getting

I had chosen to donate a percentage of sales on certain listings to a non-profit organization doing good works for the country.  Made the first sale of one of those items and checked to see how the money would be deducted.  All I found on my account is a credit I received on fees for the donated portion.

I called eBay to ask how the donation is deducted,  I was told that I had to arrange for the deduction with Paypal.  That they should have sent me a form to fill out to authorize the deduction and payment to the organization.

I called Paypal and they said I needed to go to a different Paypal website to make the arrangement. She gave me an address of a site that doesn't exist.

I have no idea how this money is paid.  It is not charged to my eBay account nor deducted from my Paypal account.

Shame on both Paypal and eBay for being so disrespectful to someone just wanting to be charitable.  Amazon Smile makes it really easy.  EBay could too if they cared.

@johnsonsales-wisconsin, forwarding of the portion of your sales to the nonprofit organizatio is done through PayPal's Giving Fund which is an independent, registered 501 (c) (3) charitable organization that's separate from Paypal-proper.

See this page for more info: http://charity.ebay.com/faq/   (Scroll down to the section labeled "FOR SELLERS.")

Your charitable donations will be deducted from your PayPal account about 30 days AFTER the sale of the item generating the income.   What this means is you need to make sure you have sufficient funds in your PayPal account at all times to cover the transfer of your donations to the recipient organization as they aren't "held in reserve" by PayPal -- but are deducted/transferred on a rolling basis, as I said about a month after any charity auctions/listings you ran, close and were paid for by buyers.

PayPal's Giving Fund transfers charitable gifts to recipient organizations on the 25th of each month.  I found that it was not unusual that it could take up to 60 days for the gift to show up in the  "Donations" area of "My Account" (which is where you can find a log of your charitable gift activity) and for the gifts to get transferred.

If you see a status of "Scheduled" next to any of your donations appearing within your "Donations" tab, don't panic.  That just means that the gift hasn't yet been transferred to your selected non profit yet, but it will be on the 25th of the next month.

Another tip, if you haven't designated PayPal as the source of your donations in your Account Settings your charitable donations cannot be automatically transferred and paid to your chosen charity.   You need to go to "My Account,"  go to the "Personal Information" section, and then scroll down to "Financial Information."

There will be an heading of "Charity Payment Method" in this section.  Indicate you want to link your PayPal account to the eBay for Charity program so that donations you made can be transferred from your PayPal account to your chosen charity.   I believe you have to provide the email address associated with your PayPal account so the right account is connected/activated.

When I first set up my account, I missed this step.  If you don't do this, eBay will send you an invoice for your charitable gift activity.   Much easier to just have the gifts automatically paid, IMO.

So all this time that eBay has been touting that we should all give of our time, or our profit to help others is just a  pose of self-gratification in bigging up eBay,  but what they are doing is completely washing their hands of the situation and passing the buck to Paypal?

Was eBay behaving in a similar manner a few years ago when they actually owned Paypal?  Double shame for that behaviour either now or in the past. For shame, shame double shame !!

Is eBay a bonafied contender for the worst business in the USA?  They are going up against a Giant Cluster Fire-Truck in current reigning champion Comcast,  I believe 3 years running as worst business chumps in the USA.

I have never had any dealings with Comcast, (thank the lord sweet baby jeebus),  but if they are worse than eBay  then they really must be a  shower of bovine bowel by-product.

A real company would be matching a portion of your donations to the charity.

Thank you so much for the information. It was what I spent over half an hour trying to get this morning, and all I got was a brush off from eBay and Paypal. Had given up. I appreciate your time in providing so much information.

@johnsonsales-wisconsin   No problem; you're welcome.

I had similar questions/problems when I first went to set my own charitable listings up.  Thanks to others here who took time to answer my questions, I was able to do so.   Just "paying it forward."  🙂

P.S. Lots of knowledgeable folks here, that for the most part are happy to help.  Next time you run into a brick wall, try posting here first before calling eBay.  Most likely you will get the info you need more quickly and in a much less frustrating way.  🙂
