At first I thought I was dealing with a scammer, but it ended well.

So from my experiences here with dealing with 100 customers a week, I tend to notice when something isn't normal. Today was one of those days.

I got a message from a customer this morning asking when he was going to get his item. At first I was thinking this was something I mailed yesterday and tracking hasn't updated yet and I would be providing Chit Chats tracking info to let him know it was mailed.

Turns out the item was "out for delivery". I had a sinking feeling... out for delivery and buyer is asking, figured the item was delivered, the scan wasn't updated and I was going to be phoning his post office on Monday to ensure the delivery scan happened. I let the buyer know the item would be delivered today.

I go to USPS site to investigate and see if there's anything on there that's not on the eBay tracking (sometimes eBay tracking lags). Looks like them item was scheduled to be delivered sometime today. I put a text notification on my phone so I could be alerted if there was a status update (I do this for all packages of concern, just to be notified, but it makes no sense to subscribe to notifications for every package I send).

Literally 10 minutes later I get a text that it's in his mailbox. I send him a message to tell him "check your mailbox, it was just delivered a few minutes ago". He replied back a few minutes later to tell me he has the parcel. I responded that I hope he likes the coins.

So hours pass, and I get a message from him later. I was a big concerned, I get anxious seeing messages from buyers after they receive something, like I'm anticipating a problem. Turns out he loves the coins, and wants a similar item if I can find it at the coin shop. We exchanged a few messages and I may have another sales in the works if the shop has what he needs.

So I'm thinking why would I jump to all these negative conclusions about a buyer? Well it dawned on me it's the culture here that makes sellers think every buyer with an issue is a scammer of some kind. I remind myself that for the most part, people are pretty reasonable (at least my customers are), but reading these boards makes me fear the worst when something isn't sitting quite right. (And let's face it, if he checked the tracking he'd have seen his item was out for delivery today, which is why I suspected something was amiss).

Well you have been getting some kooky buyers lately so your nervousness is justified. I'm so glad this buyer is happy and may turn into a repeater!

I think it's volume related... the more inventory I have and move, the more frequent the kooky buyers that come up. I'm getting an issue of some sort every week (not the same type of issue and not really anything I can fix).

My issue this week is a lost package that appears stuck in Santa Barbara... thing is, the package is actually being sent to me from a regular dealer I work with, so it's definitely a post office issue. We're thinking maybe it's enroute and missed getting scanned somewhere and will turn up in Canada before long.
