Assistant to sell items on ebay

I was looking for someone to sell sports cards on ebay. I do not have a phone to take pictures and I will be happy to discuss a commission I would be willing to pay someone to do this. I have a lot of mint/near mint cards I am looking to sell.

You aren't going to find anyone competent willing to do this.  You are better off just selling them off in a lot to a card seller.

Unless those cards are able to fetch at least $50 or more each you are wasting your time. There are a gazillion sports cards listed on Ebay.

I have a lot of cards that are worth much more than $50 I just need someone to list them on ebay and get paid a commission.

Card sellers can buy collections all day long at less than half ebay price (often far less), and selling for someone else adds layers of extra work. It isn't the sort of thing anyone competent is going to do for 10 or 20 percent.

It can also take years for a card to sell.

Cards were my original specialty, anyone saying yes to such a deal will either be incompetent or dishonest.

Find a local high school kid, friend, or relative that is looking for extra income and pay them a fair wage to list X amount of items per hour.

Commission based models do not work for eBay.  What if you sell a card for $1,000, give your guy 10% commission, and then the buyer files a return in a month.  It's not your listers fault that you have a fickle buyer and what if you already paid your lister the 10%?

I purchased a camara off eBay's for less than $50 and have take thousands of pictures.  Look at my directory.  Over 17,000 pictures in this directory alone.  This is not even half of the pictures I have taken with this same camara.

Are you actually wanting someone to sell one card at a time or are you wanting to sell the entire collection with one sale?

@johnws1

Honestly, I would advertise locally or do what @tdl_collectibles suggested.  There is just too much risk for a seller that has to deal with taxes, shipping costs, fraud, returns, the list goes on.  The seller would also want a hefty price that could add up to as much as 50%.  Like I stated, it's a big risk and not worth most sellers time.  I doubt you'll get any takers here on this forum.

Good luck to you.

Hi @johnws1

What you probably don't realize is that it is difficult making a profit selling your own items on eBay.  You would likely have to pay up to 50% commission to have someone do it for you.  That seller might have to hold onto your funds for months ... to make sure there's money available to handle a return or chargeback.

As stated, it would be best to either learn how to sell the cards yourself ... OR sell them in a lot to a single seller.

ETA:  If you have a printer with a scanner ... you can take clear photos that way.

Find a local "card store" and sell them your cards OR see if they do consignment.

Most consignment store pay you 35 - 40% of the sale price.

Where did you get your info ? Is that actual selling prices, book prices, or what you think the prices are ? There is a big difference. Are the cards graded ? Even if they are worth $50 you will be deducting the price of shipping, paying the seller, and paying the Ebay fees. You would probably get around $18-20 for that card.

I actually suggest using a USB document camera for cards as opposed to a phone, scanner or camera. They just process so much faster that way.

A good seller is probably buying his own inventory and keeping all the money.

If I were willing, I would not want a commission - but I would require you to provide:

  • your eBay account
  • your social security number and bank account attached to that account
  • you to ship the items to me so I can photograph and ship them
  • $45 per hour for my time, paid at the time I do the work

Once upon a time, eBay had the Trading Assistants program, and that didn't work out. They later tried again with eBay Valet and that also failed. The fact is, that selling things for others has so many problems and pitfalls that very, very few people will do it.

People nearly always have an unrealistic idea of the value of their stuff, so a lot of emotional drama develops.  The sales will be on the seller's 1099K, so he will have to do extra bookwork in regards to his tax filing.  Then there are questions such as: "How will you and the seller handle the refund when a buyer waits 179 days and then files a claim with PayPal or does a credit card chargeback?"  Are you willing to wait 180 days for your money?  If not, will you guarantee to cover the loss if this happens?  How will you guarantee that?  Or, "Who eats the loss if a buyer gets a refund but the returned item is damaged or a sorry substitute is sent?"

And those are just a couple of issues, out of several equally serious ones.

So, the chances of your finding anyone who will sell for you are slim to none.  Sorry to be discouraging.

If you do find someone, be sure you have a clean, clear, detailed, written contract.

I did sell a friend's card collection for them a few years back.

These were the terms.

When the dropped off the cards I just blindly split the collection in half. One half now belonged to me and that was my payment.

All the remaining cards I sold on their account. It still took an entire year for them to sell through.
