Re: Anyone know what this is?

Are there any parts that move? If so, maybe a door knocker, with the family name or the house number going in the square?

Re: Anyone know what this is?

Send a picture of it to Antiques Roadshow, if they contact you back, you know you got something great!

I think trying to identify the artist or region of similar art may help you identify what the item is?

This makes sense as then the monkey would be sitting upright.  It wouldn't be if it were a belt buckle.

It made me think of those display cases, they were so old way back then. As a kid, and when we had to move them, my brother and I would try to pick them up using the art pieces as handles. There was one on each side that matched. I can still hear her yelling at us, "pick it up from the bottom, you're going to break it, bend your knees!"  unamused Why do they put these things on top if they aren't handles? lol

She still has them, the wood is super old, and I would say the top resembles slats. She got them in Japan I think when Dad was stationed over there.
