Another store bites the dust

The second store that I had to close in the past 2 months, with a 3rd on the chopping block. I'm so glad that I don't rely on eBay for an income, or I'd be in trouble. Now I have that Queen song stuck in my head.

I've been living on them for 6 years.  It's the only reason I still bother.  The business has been well enough.

But the amount I can do (vintage) is limited and the amount they can drive up fees and carriers drive up shipping costs coupled with the returns processes is already chewing away.  I have roughly two years left, I guess.

I would normally agree if my poor sales extended past eBay and my personal accounts on eBay, but they don't. What's becoming very interesting is that my Xmas sales here were completely dead, yet the same items that I was selling were selling and for more money than mine including shipping.

I could see that happening here and there, as someone views a sellers inventory an spots an item and does the impulse buy, without checking prices. But to happen all the time was no longer a coincidence.

I have a bunch of relatives that have inactive accounts on eBay, so I contacted them, in Jan, and a few agreed to let me run my items through them as a test. Wouldn't you know it. My sales have been pretty good and fairly steady on their accounts. It's the same stuff that I keep adding to this account that doesn't sell.

So the question is...Why does it sell on their accounts, and not on mine? That's the million dollar question that only eBay can answer.

Hi Guy!  Boy, you got me with this one.  I have been an advid "finder" of Christmas items!  Love them - always trying to get the vintage ones (along with Halloween).  Don't know your selling account that includes Christmas items, so I can't really respond effectively.  HOWEVER, one thing I do know from selling on eBay for over 15 years (only bought the first 4 years), was that no matter what the month, economy, etc., Christmas items were always a good bet .... especially vintage German (same with Halloween vintage German).  If you have those type items and aren't selling, alas something is horribly wrong with eBay .... very scary!

Chuckles.  I love your post.  My daughter is 27 (disabled) and she is definitely still a "kid" (Pokemon, Godzilla, My Little Pony - good Lord if I tried to sell any, not to mention her rare punk cds - she'd rather be homeless).  I'm her mom too ... only she would never come up with a "snarky" reply .... I'm all she has and she's all I've got!  Such is life 🙂

Good advice. Yes, when you list items not in demand or over-priced and buyers are not willing to buy those items then definitely a store is not worth it. At some point a seller with a store needs to do a little accounting and figure that out.

Sorry, but still confused.  So if a store is located in China or Tiawan, and they can sale items (100,000's hundreds of thousands) for just a penny ... yes, just 1 cent, with FREE SHIPPING to the United States, how does an honest U.S. seller battle that?  How can a seller in China, sell an item for exactly .01  to a whopping .99 cents with free shipping?  I guess I'll see.  Started buying some of those offerings.  Heck, if I can buy something for just a penny with NO shipping cost, then maybe, just maybe I can actually start re-selling and making some money.  Hang in there timeless!  Maybe we can turn the tables?  If nothing else, my daughter will enjoy her new stuff for only a penny or two!

I don't have answers but it does prove what I've been saying. Sell an item at a good price and you will get buyers. Good luck buying those 1 cent items. Maybe you can make a profit, I don't really know as I have never tried that.

Not so much concerned with making a profit (my daughter will no doubt love the items) - I was more curious to see if I actually receive them.  Just doesn't make any sense - how can you sell something for a penny or up to one dollar with free shipping from overseas?  Do you know?  What do you sell?

It didn't matter what it was, nothing was selling that Nov and Dec. You had a question about Chinese items selling for a penny to a buck with free shipping to the US. It's actually a pretty simple process, and they actually make money. China is still considered a developing nation by the UN. This allows the Chinese government to get all types of benefits from the UN. Look at it like global welfare.

China gets all it's mail subsidized to the US. So...The US gives the UN billions to dole out to these welfare programs. The UN then gives this money to China for example. China then gives some of the money to anyone shipping items out of the country. That's how they make their money. They don't need much money if they live out in the country. Plus China is one huge welfare state as it is.

Now the US also lets these packages enter the US postal system for little to no money. To make up for the lost revenue, The PO keeps raising it's rates on us, and if you pay federal income taxes, your getting whacked there as well for the lost revenue.

That would literately be a dead end job. You'll get to experience the original meaning of "Getting stoned".

Not being afraid of hard work and long hours is one thing, losing money while working is quite another.

Right there with ya. Selling on this site is like setting up a stand in the middle of Death Valley.

Selling hot chocolate at noon ......
