Annoyed: Calculating Shipping for Multi-Item Order

So I had a mult-item order and I was trying to figure out the shipping cost so I could adjust the buuyer's invoice.  I went into "print label" and pretended I was going to and put in what would be the total weight of the box and it gave me a total of $14.45  (2.2 lbs from NJ to CA).

Modified the invoice to that amount and sent to buyer.  Buyer pays I just went to print off the actual label.  To my suprise that $14.45 was not the retail rate: it was the online rate after the discount.

Never noticed before that it did it that way.  I am very annoyed though I suppose I have no one to blame but myself, should have gotten the shipping cost on usps.com   Anyone else ever gotten stung like this before?

Happy 2018! May this upcoming year be a prosperous one!

I don't understand. You wanted to charge the buyer the retail rate while you were actually was billed for the discount rate?

if so, somewhere there was a setting to pass along the discount. Turn it off.

Another way is is to add a handling fee.

Unfortunately that was an oops on you. Why would eBay show the retail price?

Lesson learned.
Congrats on the sales though!

Not stung ... but yes, going thru the motions of printing the label will give you the discount cost that you will be charged. This is one of the reason I always use the eBay online Shipping Calculator when quoting shipping costs to inquiring buyers. I also give them the URL of the calculator and the exact size & weight of the package so they can check it for themselves. If shipping in multiple boxes, I give them each box size & weight.

That pretty much always ends any discussion of the high costs of shipping.

If your items will fit in either of the A boxes, or even the medium flat rate, you might save yourself a little money rather than paying for a 3 pound label.   Of course I realize they might not fit.

I was looking for the retail rate as that's what I wanted to charge the customer.  eBay gave me the online rate -- and I didn't know that -- so that's what I passed on  to the customer.  $3 difference.

I'm with fancy fox - confused.  Did you want to pocket the difference between USPS retail and the commercial rate paid when using ebay shipping?

I'm surprised that you would think an ebay shipping calculation would not be the exact same number that prints on the label; it's ebay shipping.

Yes, you could have gone to USPS for the rate and then charged the buyer that cost and then used a stealth label.  I'm kind of surprised you didn't know that.

Of course, I could be just confused ...

I'm sure you realize that by going to the label itself that it will show your cost (on line rate) since when you print a label you don't do anything to adjust the retail rate to online.  It is what it is.

Now I've done it that way myself since it is easy, but just remember to add a handling fee to this online amount to cover whatever extra you want them to actually pay.

Fern,

The issue is this was not for a listing.  My listing had no handling fee -- I can not decide to add one after the fact.  I just needed the retail rate to modify a multi-order invoice for combined shipping AFTER she already committed to buy 3 items and was just waiting on the modified shipping cost on the invoice.

eBay calculated the on-line price for me and I was too dense to realize this so I charged her that on her invoice.  I charged her the online price and I wanted to charge her retail won't make that mistake again.

I think I made this thread more confusing then it has to be.

@klassic*kids

What I do is go directly to USPS to calculate a quote for a buyer.

Enter zip to and from, enter weight and dimensions. And I send them a screenshot of that page, too.

I understood what you did.  I assume the shipping shown to the buyer separately for those three items was quite a bit more than what you ended up invoicing them.  All I meant was that when you see the actual amount it will cost you, by calculating as you did,  simply add a little to the invoice.  I called it handling, but you can call it charging retail if it makes you feel better.  Either way, the buyer is happy since it is less than the retail for all three.   Since you were wanting to charge them retail just estimate next time by manually adding some to your combined invoice.   I do combined shipping like this all the time.

The problem here was I already sent her a modified invoice of 14.45 total shipping (thinking it was retail cost) and she then paid it -- I didn't find out it was retai price until I printed the actual label and saw *I* was charged the 14.45 for it.  I found out too late and too late to add a handling fee into the invoice.  She had already paid by the time I saw what happened.

I guess the bright side is she did save money as opposed to paying each shipping cost seperately.

When you go to buy postage on eBay, it will show you the retail rate, but not as the bottom line.  You have to look above the *cough cough* eBay discount  Smiley Happy

fwiw - If I'm looking to cinch a multi item order, I will often quote a shipping cost just above my cost plus fees. But I AM aware the calculator on the label page will give me the TRS rate = )

Here's a hint - if you're sending an adjusted shipping invoice use the calculator on that page.

I understand.  I was just offering a tip for the future.  I realize you didn't know for this sale.
