I have been reading, and replying to some of the latest concerns as sellers. I too have been a seller for 20 years. Yes, we are who made ebay. We are the ones who got our stuff out of the garage and basement and listed it, yes if it weren't for us ebay wouldn't be who they are today.
I too am very frustrated with all the new changes. Yes paypal was awesome. When my phone went cha ching, I had money in my pocket now!
I too have been hit with the high not as described rate and I too spent hours chatting with ebay personnel who didn't have a clue. I too have been forced into money management and I don't like it one bit.
Here is what I have come up with and my take away.
I am not a high volume seller. I do about 300 items a year/ $20,000 in sales.
I make money and it pays for my toys. I could make more if I put more into it.
I sell automotive parts. If there were another venue as good as ebay Motors I would give it a try. BUT, there isn't SOOO....
After exhausting all avenues with ebay, reading everyone else's complaints. I needed a new plan because I'm not done making money and buying toys.
First, I looked at my returns. Most of the not as described were my fault. Not all, but most. Some I sent the wrong item, others didn't work. And then damaged in shipping ( I don't agree with). And then there are some that the buyer either lied or just checked whatever was easiest to do a return.
Ok, that's what I have to work with. Now, I have to make sure the correct item is sent, check and double check. Next, better descriptions, pointing out flaws as best as I can. Better packing to prevent damaged in shipping. The next thing I did was change my feedback to a custom message. I thank them for the purchase and ask them to contact me before starting a return. I have changed my packing slip to also say that, then I took it one step further and added a sticker that I stick right on the part, again it is thanking them for the purchase and asking them to contact me first. My thinking is to cut down on return requests and maybe I can rectify the situation before a return request is activated.
The next step is after I do get a return request and the buyer states that it is not as described. I talked to several people at ebay about this. I have not used it yet since I've talked to them but, they claim that they will not let a buyer abuse the money back guarantee. If a buyer claims it not to be as described and it is exactly as described I will contact ebay as they told me to do and dispute it before I accept the return.
With these steps, I should be able to cut my returns down drastically.
The next thing that has been a problem as of late is the extra fee's we are hit with. Simple solution to that is raise your prices. That is how the economy works and why cost of living goes up. After I got hit with a 5% charge, I raised my prices 5%. My volume is still the same. Ebay can't keep raising and us eating it. Raise your prices accordingly.
Now money management. I don't like it, I don't want it, I can't change it. Yes I want paypal back, but it isn't coming back. So I have adjusted to deal with that. I set up a separate bank account for ebay only. I keep money in there for shipping and expenses. I do have to say one thing it has gotten better since they first started. I do like the fact that I no longer have a monthly ebay bill. It isn't as good as it was with paypal, I wish I could do something else but I know in the end it is ebay's game and their field that I play on.
For me leaving isn't the answer. I still make money, I can adjust. Nothing stays the same, so why do we expect a growing business to stay the same? There are those who can change and prosper and those who will be left behind. I'm not willing to be the one left behind.

I agree with you - but it sure seems like eBay needs to play catch-up with the way they protect their community.

EBAY IS NOW JOINING THE REST OF EVIL CORPORATE AMERICA AND SAYING "SCREW YOU AMERICAN! YOU COUNT FOR NOTHING ANYMORE. AND ENJOY YOUR ILLEGITIMATE COMMUNIST "PRESIDENT".

Gee I like the smell of fresh economic rationalism in the morning
and cliches and motivational slogans do not work in the reality of the situation
Certainly the US Marines may advise to "Improvise, Adapt, and Overcome" [we will not mention the war in Afghanistan however] but that assumes that the structures are not fixed, you can not adapt or improvise in reality when using the set platform of ebay.
The concept that change happens to improve is also a cliche that assumes that the changes are relevant and workable. The recent changes to listing categories to make searching on Ebay according to the seller hub "more intuitive", and to work better with phones and allow people to search primarily on brands and colour does not match the way that BOTH sellers and buyers of second hand goods operate - as well as collectibles such as stamps and coins search for, buy, sell, organise and classify items. This is how all of the trade in collectibles works both buyers and sellers, both small scale and major players, both experienced and rookies . Some Ebay management has now managed to anger a global community of their users, across many countries and ethnicities because they do not understand their stakeholders ... in fact they have failed one of the baseline laws for business optimisation and competitiveness! So they can not get their own economic rationalism right!
It would appear that Ebay wants to become a rival to Amazon and AliBaba and sell items that are new and straight from the factory.
Possibly too they see their ideal customer as adolescent, urban based, not highly text driven/literate and brand-driven.
People buying sneakers or iphones.
yet they still advise people to make money for summer and for christmas by cleaning out their cupboards and spare rooms ... very schizoid
But if both sellers and buyers leave, trade will drop and commissions thus profits to Ebay will drop too. They clearly have not thought this through

We're about 18% of the market on eBay - I'm not sure what we want is of any particular concern to the C-suite. So we have to adapt.

Just my insight into eBay have been selling since 2010. The first 3 years I enjoyed selling on eBay each year was significantly better than the previous year, made decent money and sales were profitable averaged 55%+ GP based on total selling price (including shipping cost). I don't a agree that sellers made eBay I believe that eBay and buyers made sellers. eBay developed the venue for sellers to "peddle" their wares and buyers had confidence to buy on line from a seller they don't really know. After my first three years eBay mad a significant change by bringing on a new primary search engine, Cassini, and dropped Google. Then the hoops started coming of the barrel went into decline.. That launch was a disaster for sellers we had to redo (reword) our listing at least 3 times. Shipping rates were increasing. Then eBay reduced the benefits of being a TRS seller (which I was) and made it harder to qualify profits declined. Competition (more sellers) lead to a saturation in many sales categories brought on "price declines" an lower margins, then now we have the the state sales tax issues in the last couple of years that closed the price gap between on line sellers & B & M stores. Selling became less fun and I have all but stopped trying to get more of the buyers money - only have a few items active. Personally on a percentage base of my selling cost basis I see little difference in the FVF/listing fee I paid to eBay/PayPal in 2010 as I would pay to eBay today under the Managed Payment program - a non issue IMO. But the fun is gone and it seem resolution of the on line IT issues is way to slow.
Certainly eBay competition (Amazon) has led many of the changes that eBay has implemented - like free no hassle returns. As a personal example, bought some glass screen protectors for our new cell phones on Amazon , could not get the air bubbles out after several attempts. Contacted Amazon and made a claim and was promptly refunded fully and did not have to return the protectors - no hassle - buyers get spoiled by that and expect the same from eBay. Our daughter a '65 model introduced us to eBay back in 2008 and set up our membership and we only bought for 2 years then started selling in '10. She now only buys stuff on Amazon and my wife does too. I shop both.

It appears as if it did!
Update! Since I have made all the changes my returns have been cut in half, sales are up 47% and I am having the best year I have ever had on ebay.
I did not employ the US Marines, just made changes and adapted.
