I have a buyer who wanted their item shipped fast, but they forgot to pay. So I went to Find Contact Info looking for a phone number (they aren't answering messages). I put in their info and then I get this ebay note: "This feature has been deprecated"
I have a pretty good vocabulary but I had to look up deprecated and it can mean deplored, detested, frowned on.
I knew they'd get rid of this feature some day but the word choice is puzzling.

"Deprecated" is a term most-used in software and programming. It applies to features that still exist in current versions of tools or programs and means those features will no longer be supported and will disappear at some point.
When a feature is "deprecated", it means it won't be available in future versions, and is no longer recommended. The warning usually comes quite a bit sooner than the next version that removes the feature.
eBay's message about contact info being deprecated should have been applied while the feature was still live, as a warning that it would soon be gone—and they should have said "this feature will soon be removed from the site". eBay's use of the message after the feature has been removed is a bit odd. The message should now read "This feature has been removed from the site."
However, the contact feature is available to programmers through eBay's API (programmer's interface) and programmers who use that API would see "deprecated" next to that feature in the API documentation and would know exactly what to expect. Thus, programmers would begin removing it from their own tools before the termination date. I assume the "deprecated" warning came out about a year ago (giving programmers a year to revise their tools) and eBay finally pulled the plug recently. The message looks a lot like a warning message that came straight from the API and was displayed on the screen (eBay tools use their own APIs too).
"Deprecated" is not to be confused with "depreciated". They are two different words, with somewhat similar meanings.
Depreciation lowers in value over time.
Deprecation, falling out of favor, means the feature is still usable until it is terminated.

Synonyms
- be deprecated(chiefly of a software feature) be usable but regarded as obsolete and best avoided, typically because it has been superseded.
‘this feature is deprecated and will be removed in later versions’‘avoid the deprecated element that causes text to flash on and off’
In this case, they haven't updated the error message, becuase it's not available anymore.
You can't get contact information for someone until after they have paid, in order to discourage off-eBay sales.

I remembe rthe first time I saw that message. I thought it was a very strange choice of words as well, and I didn't really think it was applicable.

Accounting and tax speak-depreciated is lowering the value of an item over time and then deducting the depreciated amount.
But what does that mean here? That your product has been downgraded?

It simply means, the feature is not considered a good idea and has been removed.
Some people get upset if you give out their phone number.

Send a payment reminder message through ebay messages or another invoice from your sold items as a reminder, or if it's been more than 2 full days since the listing ended and you don't want to wait, you can select Report an unpaid item.
When I see buyer wants item shipped fast but they didn't pay, I see a possible red flag. Not necessarily a scam but one of the components.
Good luck

No, it doesn't mean the product has been downgraded. Depreciated and deprecated are close but they don't mean the same thing.

Sorry castlemagicmemories, I could only pick one solution and I had to go with shipscript (we owe them big time!).
But you were a very close runner up. Thank you.

Thank YOU! No worries and no apologies necessary! It's an honor to come up in second to Shipscript and believe me, I am nowhere in their league! I have no problem with that and Shipscript is a Board legend that I admire greatly for their knowledge and all the help they have given people!
