I don’t know what is going on.
I received formal looking eBay email that I don’t know anything about.
Who must have my password to make this kind of request. And why?
ebay was supposed to call me back 2x but didn’t.
Do get a lot of spam recently but this is ridiculous…

Was this an e-mail only? Did you have a matching message from eBay in your MESSAGES on your eBay account?
If the answer to the second question is no, then its a scam to scare you into using links in that e-mail. DON'T.
I would also update the password for your eBay account as a precaution and make sure your recovery options are current.
I get a lot of scare tactic e-mails all the time. Never believe just an e-mail and certainly never click any links in them!
Use your normal methods of checking any account for whatever service that is pretending to have an issue directly. I get ones from eBay, Apple, Amazon, just to name a few. All have the same purpose. To scare someone into panicking and reacting in a way that would open them to further issue.

Whew!
not in messages.

I suggest you turn off all ebay emails and do everything from the website. It basically completely insulates you from various scams.

From what email address was the email sent @jewelbiz ? Not the name, but the actual email address.
Revising my post to specify: the domain of the email address, not the full email address.
Most emails from eBay are sent from an eBay.com domain.
Thanks for pointing out I forgot to specify domain only @gator08041971 .

Not sure how it "insulates" you from anything to be honest. You can still get scam e-mails whether you use any e-mail correspondence with eBay or not.
The only thing is knowing you shouldn't be getting any e-mails so that getting one can be automatically ignored. But you can accomplish the same thing by simply not taking the e-mail for truth till you can log in and verify it with the account directly.
I have turned off some notifications, like when listing things, etc.
Might not want to share actual e-mails here. Mods would delete it anyway. But I know you are checking to see if its from eBay or not. Keep in mind, this can be spoofed too, besides just a name cover change.
I had a couple recently that spoofed my email address. I could not locate the source, even looking at the header code. Very annoying. Also have seen it with a message that I got from PayPal that wasn't PayPal.

Look at the source code - that should tell the story.

I don’t know how to look at source code but I clicked on links saying that I should have them call me about this request so I gave whoever it is my real phone number.
I was in a tizzy.
No wonder they never called me back.
I received lots of spam recently shockingly including packages I never ordered.

Someone else posted last week about an email that they received that looked like it was from ebay. It seems the scammers are really getting good at scamming.
Change your passwords and you should be good to go. You may want to also change your usernames and passwords for any funding sources attached to ebay, just as a precaution.

Scammers target banks, other online market places, credit cards, you name it.
They use scare tactics to get you to click the links and hopefully provide them with the information they are seeking. Key is to NEVER click links in an email and always go to the source (bank, eBay, Ama***) and verify.
I get "we have closed your credit card due to fraud", "Your overdraft checking protection is due", "we noticed suspicious activity on your account".
Of course investigate but never using the links or numbers in an email, just no bueno

If you clicked on a link you should run a scan on your system. I also suggest changing your eBay password and be on the lookout for scam texts and calls to your phone.
Did you give them any info other than your phone number?
Forward the email to spoof@ebay.com

Definately a scan. My wife clicked on a hinky link on her computer. A scan found a couple of things not apparent at first.

My wife gets those PayPal scare Emails. I've taught her to bring my attention to any communication that is "scary" from any source.
I have some fun sometimes , especially with the phone call scams. "I am agent (insert name here) from the DEA and Customs and there's a package full of cash, cocaine and fentanly with your name on it".....LOL.
Big fun messing with them and seeing how mad I can make them before they figure it out and cuss me out.
