12.55%. That was the selling fee on an item I just sold on eBay. And it wasn’t 12.55% off the selling price. No, they used the final price including taxes and shipping.

Item sold for $950. They took $130 which is 13.7% because the item went for $1,040 with taxes and shipping when I don’t see a cent of the taxes and shipping.

It had been years since I sold anything on eBay. I know I should’ve checked the fees beforehand, but it was something like 3-4% last time I sold something. It is a mistake I won’t make again. What do people use? Amazon? Craigslist? Facebook market place?

You must have been selling a long, long time ago:

You left out the listing fees. Back in the good 'ol days, listing wasn't free.

The easier you are to offend the easier you are to control.

And? That's about what it's been for ages if you considered the old Paypal+Ebay fees combined. It's a little more or a little less in most categories with Managed Payments.

Correct. The fee is based on the total sale, shipping and tax included. Not sure why that is al that surprising, that is also nothing new at least for the last decade or so. (Well I guess 2-3 years only for the tax part since that is newer.)

Okay then.  You also won't find anywhere NEAR as much traffic (people looking to buy your items) on ANY other site other than AZ. The other newer sites as of right now don't have even 1/20th of the products listed in any given category or 1/50th the traffic that ebay has. It's a service, they have an established platform for over 25 years so of course you're going to pay a premium for that. Honestly, I think the fees are just fine when you compare elsewhere. I expect those to increase steadily though in the near future to 15% or more...

I to was surprised at the high fees and taxes. The fun was when someone who bid and won asked to cancel purchase. I received an email from eBay about canceling the order… like it was a eBay screwup. I suspect they choked on the taxes. They gave me a free repost. I hope it doesn’t sell so I can list it on Craigslist or market place for local sale, no taxes or shipping. Sorry eBay. You are my last place I want to shop or sell!

Correct, Ebay fees are almost double your asking price but not much you can do. Just figure approximately 20% fees instead of the bogus advertised 12.5%. Any other site would probably be useless as they have nowhere near the visibility of Ebay. Good luck.
