Allowing a buyer not to return an item

I sold an item with a 30 day return. A buyer had a problem with the item.  I returned the purchase price.

In an email to the buyer I told him I refunded the purchase amount BUT also said he could keep the item and it was not necessary to sent it back.

Question is: Will ebay tell him to send back the item seeing that my listing says 30 returns with buyer to pay return shipping.

If you already sent a refund, Ebay won't tell him it's necessary to return the item.
