After 22+ years I'm out. Sellers have no protection

Last month I sold a camera lens , that was returned to me just a shell with all the insides ( motor) taken out. I took it as a cost of doing business and moved on

1 week ago I got a return request on an item listed " for parts" "not working" with plenty of pictures listed

https://www.ebay.com/itm/145286954231

Reason for return being the buyer cant find additional parts needed to install the product so they claimed "Reason Missing parts or pieces".  Parts that were never promised, implied  or listed. If the parts wouldve been included that wouldve been a $400 auction

Contacted ebay Twitter team and was told to accept the return no matter what

"Even if a buyer chooses a wrong return reason, they have options to get their money back.  ~Jessica"

There's no seller protection at all. Scammers can claim whatever they want and they get away with it.
I'm probably done selling and I'll either close my account or use it just for buying
The above is clearly a buyer remorse, buyer believed they can source extra parts, and when they could not they misused the returns. Shipping one way was $55.

Sellers have tons of protection, maybe take pictures of everything and package it better next time?

it was not about packaging nor pictures. Seller wants parts that were not advertised in the auction.

It is frustrating to get two of these bogus claims in a short period.

But your cost to get the as-is camera back would be the cost of shipping both ways.

Is that higher or lower than the resale value of the as-is camera after fees and packaging costs?

If it is higher, abandon the item and refund.

If it is lower, send the return shipping label, refund, relist, resell.

It's business, not personal.

What protection would that give you?

what's frustrating is listing an item "for parts", "not working" and having a return request for parts that were not even included with the auction. And ebay telling you just refund , buyers always find ways to circumvent the system

Since you're leaving I guess it doesn't really matter,

but I've learned throughout the years that it is not a good idea to list/sell

something that is as-is, not working or for parts only.

You're just asking for trouble.

That's a personal experience. But "for parts" it's exactly what it "for parts" . He waited 30 days to open a case. He was hoping to save $200 by sourcing extra parts himself and when he couldnt he opened a phony return. I'm not frustrated with him, i'm frustrated with ebay that allows the whole scam, bogus reason to act like a valide return return reason. Buyer made the mistake to say him not finding extra parts want to return it. If Ebay would investigate by just reading the reason buyer wants to return, they'd close the return request either as buyer remorse or fraudulent

The camera could have had a higher value but it is totally irrelevant since the buyer gutted the camera and sent back a shell.

A thief will be a thief no matter what condition category something is sold in. The problem is ebay coddling/condoning thieves who steal from their sellers.

Re: After 22+ years I'm out. Sellers have no protection

There are as many buyers claiming sellers are scammers as there are sellers claiming it's buyers.
It's a two way street.
If you sell stuff, sooner or later, you'll get scammed.
If you buy stuff, same thing.
When you get "got", you move on.  There's nothing you can do.
How do you want eBay to decide who's right?  Whoever has the most believable story?

I do think the return window needs to be 10 days (for any reason) instead of 30.
And I do think the buyer should have to pay the return shipping. Regardless of reason.
Heck, there shouldn't even be a reason for them to choose.  If they choose to tell you why in a message, that's fine.  But there shouldn't be that option when they want to return something.

You might have put for parts in the listing, but under condition, it listed as used, which means it should work as intended.

Have a great day.

it does work as intended , unless you want to add extra parts to turn it into something better. It can easily be installed and fully functional the way it is.

...and his return was not for what i sent him but rather for what he wanted to buy and couldnt source . Why trying to put me in a bad light when even the buyer says  returning for not being able to source extra parts.

True, technically the description was used and should be working. BUT, selling anything that is not working and/or missing parts is risky business even if the listing condition is "not working, for parts only". And just for the reasons the OP stated. Buyer thought they could make it work.....

I had to quit listing anything that did not work years ago, just for those reasons. Not worth the hassle and the hits on Seller Metrics.  As a matter in fact, when eBay  implemented Seller Metrics,  that is when I quit listing them.

Junk is was it is, junk.
