Absolute plummet in sales. Something turned off, maybe :)

I have been selling on eBay for over 20 years.  With over 4,000 items listed I usually generate a consistent amount of sales daily.  I understand the ebbs and flows month by month, and the categories I sell in typically die down in the summer.  I also have seen and understand the sizable downturn in eBay sales the past few years which I attribute to several reasons.  Some are eBay's doing, some increased competition and some are the economy.  With all that being said, something seems to have literally turned off since last Monday.  Since then I have had 4 of my worst selling days in the past 3+ years.  None of my selling metrics have changes, and I haven't done anything different in listing/promotions since.  I am not sure if eBay has tweaked something or I have just had the bad luck of running into a brutal eBay stretch.  Funny thing is my website had a nice uptick in sales this week from my weekly average.  Has anyone noticed a sizable downturn in the last week or so?

You named the reasons for the ebbs and flows of eBay sales.

I believe one of the factors right now is the system glitches caused by a recent software update.  Every day I  am finding it difficult to navigate on eBay without constantly getting the "Page Not Found" with the little raincoat boy.  This happens as I pull up a short list of my own listings to start a "Sell Similar" listing, or when I click on a listing.   This is happening to buyers and no doubt they just go away!

Last evening it was so bad, I finally gave up listing.  I usually scan about 100 items and can get through them in an evening.  I got about a dozen done.  The final one I had to redo 3 times, as their system refused to save it.

Could be that moderate value collectibles are suffering the most right now. Things in the $75-300 range. Which is a lot of what I offer too. I think the art on your Maryland currency is by Thomas Sparrow a notable colonial artist who illustrated the Maryland Commisary's Guide

My sales are 25% down from the previous month that was 25% down... and so on. I spent some time to go through my list of sold items, compared to my active listings, then concluded, it's not eBay, not me, but -like it or not- supply and demand. Buyers are forced to spend bigger part of their hard earned money on stupid things, like food, housing, transportation and have less money for buying my precious collectibles. Many people of the same group looking for extra income, finding things in their homes that no longer important for them. Here comes eBay for the rescue. That extra competitive supply put enormous pressure of the prices and evidently for the sales levels. It appears, the only solution is to follow the market trend.

People are too busy working hard and just trying to have enough money just to afford groceries.  60% percent of Americans right now are living paycheck to paycheck. The country's economy has not been this bad in 40 years. How much are groceries in your area?

Going back to the seasonal thing.  Collectibles are an indoor / cold weather thing.  People are now going outdoors to do fun things, or to do their yardwork.   I'm sitting out on my patio right now with my laptop!

We go to a local pub restaurant every Wednesday evening.  Much of the year the place is packed, we get there early to get seats in the bar area.  The past few weeks?  Crickets!  We walk right in and get the best seats. Why?  People aren't going to indoor restaurants.  They're out having fun somewhere, or at a place with outdoor dining.    We notice our neighborhood is empty on weekends. Everyone is going to the beach or mountains.

So spend the time organizing your inventory, listing a mess of stuff for the fall or get this... knock off and go outdoors yourself!  😄

This is the right attitude. Enjoy Life. Some things you just can't control. Get outside. Keep things simple and live within your means.  Have fun.

What's odd is that I'll make no sales for a week and then all of a sudden get 3 sales in one day. That keeps happening. Also, I notice that I sell far more as new listings than as items I've had on for awhile. I recently put on 3 items and 2 of them sold in less than a da=y while the other 280 items just sit there. It looks to me like they hunt for new listings and ignore the rest.

Depending on where you get your information the economy is not bad. Yes prices have risen..however people buy a lot of stuff that they absolutely do not need. Take my neighbor..a new BIG truck..easily $75,000 and a fuel guzzler. I could go on and on,. $10,000 hunting trips..you can get my drift.

My husband does the grocery shopping and he knows his prices. He goes where they are always the lowest. Yes they have gone up, but nothing astounding. You can blame the big corporations for prices . They have record profits. Marriott corporation had a banner year for 2023 with profits reaching all time highs. The hotel we always stayed at in Hawaii went from $500 a night beachfront to $1000 a night golf course. People have to say no to spending. We said no to going back to Hawaii as the value was not there.

Another example. I am not a fan of McDonalds, but a month ago I decided to go get a cheeseburger, fries and a drink. It was over $13 and was awful. As I sat in my car eating this “thing” I watched all the same people who continually complain about costs..mostly driving new cars that likely were not paid for. These are the same ones complaining about the cost of the nasty cheeseburger. However they had new vehicles. We have two vehicles, and 2011 Xterra, and a 2017 Honda. They are paid for.

If people would just say no to unnecessary spending prices would go down…look at the EV market. Perfect example.

My sales are down horribly. I had a customer who want to purchase an item I had $13.99 free shipping..she sent me a message “i would like to buy this for $8. It is $15.99 on Amazon, but THIS is eBay. I blocked her and moved on.

One last comment, we have a large pool, and were paying some guy $150 a month to “check it once a week” we determined that we could easily do this ourselves,   Now we do exactly what he did, the pool chemicals are fine, and we saved $1800 a year.

People can think what they want...but it's like a roller coaster lately on sales.

I have free Domestic Shipping and not free International Shipping...I'll have like 3 days with a couple of just international sales with no domestic sales and then it's like 4 days of 10-15 domestic sales with no international sales. I don't count this in with "repeat buyers" because they usually buy something every week.

eBay will make more with a sale with a charge for international shipping vs. a  free shipping charge.

I feel like the algorithms are pushing for International sales for that shipping charge that is added to the sale for a bigger eBay fee.

Bulgaria, Mexico, Brazil, Uruguay, Ireland  to name a few countries I usually never have sales to.

Bulgaria and Mexico....I guess first sales ever for those countries and those are iffy countries to mail to.

Nothing sold today yet if I see an International sale I know it is be 3 days of only International sales.

Just the way I look at it.

Interestingly corporations are greedy for having profits for their shareholders, while you're selling your 13.99 thing probably for charity, I guess, unless your goal is to make some money. Are the motivations the same or not? The U.S. is a Country of 350 million people. Most of this population not doing as well as the other, smaller part, you mentioned. That has nothing to do with greed, but the law of economy, supply and demand.

@oszika  And we all know where the tax breaks came from for the wealthy. Well at least those who read.

‘’additionally we have a society of poorly educated, hooked on social media, people who get their news from a reel at Instagram.”

Those same neighbors have children, 10 years old who have Instagram accounts, with  disgusting posts. They never come out of their house, and are unable to communicate , get suspended from school, and the father publicly supports the KKK. These type of people concern me more than the cost of eggs or gas.

oh my 13.99 thing is not for charity…

I have had more international sales in the past 6 months than I probably have had the past 20 years combined!

Paycheck-to-paycheck folks are what fuels online retail.  That crowd buys.  That’s how they became paycheck to paycheck - and stayed there.
