I HAVE SOME ITEMS WITH A LOT OF "WATCHERS", SO I'M THINKING, WHY THE HELL AREN'T THEY BUYING? SO, I GOOGLED THE SAME, AND CAME UPON A STRING OF COMMENTS WITH AN INTERESTING WAY TO CHECK AND SEE IF THIS IS A MYTH OR A REAL PERSON OR AN EBAY BOT.
1. ACCORDING TO A FEW PEOPLE, EBAY DOES HAVE BOTS THAT WATCH ITEMS, AND THAT "THEY" (WHOA MIB MAYBE) ARE AWARE OF IT AND IT HAS BEEN AROUND FOR A DECADE OR MORE.
2. BUYER'S CAN "BLOCK" SELLER'S FROM SENDING OFFERS." SO IF THAT'S TRUE, THEN IT COULD BE THAT SOMEONE IS WATCHING YOUR ITEM.
3. THE IDEA IS THAT YOU SEND OFFER'S, LIKE GOING FISHING, SEE WHAT YOU "CATCH."
4. SOME HAVE EVEN SUGGESTED TO END THE ITEM AND RELIST IT.
I HAVE 25 "PEOPLE" WHOM I ASSUME THAT ARE WATCHING ONE OF MY ITEMS, SO I SENT OUT 25 OFFERS, CLOSED THE SCREEN, WENT BACK INTO THE LISTING AND AT THE TOP WERE IT TELLS YOU HOW MANY YOU HAVE ALREADY SOLD, WILL ALSO BE HOW MANY OFFER'S YOU SENT OUT.
OUT OF 25 "WATCHERS" ONLY 9 OFFERS WERE SENT OUT. ONLY 9.
SO, WHAT ARE WE AS SELLER'S USING THIS PLATFORM AND SPENDING MONEY FOR? WHY PAY TO "PROMOTE" ITEMS THAT MAY OR MAY NOT BE WATCHED BY PEOPLE, ONLY BY BOTS? ARE WE "PROMOTING TO BOTS?" I THINK EBAY SHOULD NOT CHARGE SELLERS ANYTHING TO PROMOTE UNLESS YOU FIX THIS BOT ISSUE. THAT'S NOT FAIR. I UNDERSTAND THAT LEGIT BUYERS WHO ARE ACTUALLY WATCHING DON'T WANT TO BE BOMBARDED WITH OFFER JUNK MAIL, BUT SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE ABOUT THIS, NOW THAT I AM EXTREMELY ANNOYED, IS A "BOT" GOING TO READ THIS MESSAGE?!
I GUESS I'LL NEVER KNOW.....

My items are BIN and I have sold many items that have had a number of 'watches'. I've also had potential buyers contact me wanting the item after it sold.

Agreed, I get the feel that ebay adds 1-2 views on a group of listings to make you think people have viewed. It always happens in groups. How can the same 4 items in different categories each had 1 view to put each them at 7 views total

I didn't read the other replies, but here's MY take on it... who cares? But for a real response....watchers are just that, watchers. Until someone buys your widget, it doesn't matter if one or one thousand are watching it, the only thing that matters is that it sold, right?
In addition, one's item moves UP in search position to some degree based on the number of watchers it has. Watchers on an item tells the system that that item is popular, and up in position it goes. So whether it's bots, or real people, I'd be thankful for that, as it's doing nothing but actually helping your item get more visibility, which in turn, increases the odds of a sale.

Yeah, but I've read where folks have a bunch of stuff on their watch list, like more than a hundred. That many? It's more like social media than a marketplace.

You know buyers read these boards, right? Sellers wonder why good buyers don't buy anything here, this is a reason why. Whining over watchers.
I have 134 items on my watch list on my buyer's account at this very moment. Every single one of them is an item that at some point in time I want to buy. They are not necessities - they are pure wants. I save up the money and I buy. Is that a problem for you? Maybe I should go check my list right now, and if one of those items is yours I should remove it. Heaven forbid I should cause you any angst. Attitude like that does not deserve my purchase.
As to social media, I have no idea as I don't do social media other than Twitter for severe WX reports.

Currently I am watching over a thousand items on a dozen different lists.
Some of those items are spare parts or replacements for things I have that I may need to purchase in the future, but do not need to keep on hand now; I spent some time finding the items so that if the need arises I can quickly scan my list and make a purchase, if it becomes necessary, rather than looking up a part number or figuring out which substitutes will work for my application when I am in a hurry.
Some items are part of a set of items for an entire project, and I may be waiting until all the parts are available before buying them all at once.
Some are items that I am considering, but have not decided which one to purchase yet. I may check the feedback the seller receives to see if the item appears to be a good deal that lives up to its description, or to check if a better alternative becomes available in the mean time.
Some items may be similar to other items I already have, but I am curious to see if the seller lists any other new items like it, and watching one item is a good way to keep track of a seller rather than using up one of only a hundred available Saved Seller spots.
Some items I do not intend to purchase, I just want to keep track of for amusement, like the $300 item entitled "Time Machine (works)"; a listing may have a funny typo or a particularly bad picture; I may suspect an account is hijacked or fraudulent and I am waiting to see if the seller receives any feedback or is removed by eBay.
In some cases, I may find an item I want to purchase, but the seller may not ship to my location, or may be asking too much for shipping; I may check back periodically to see if the seller has changed the terms of shipping, or to remind myself to search for a substitute that can be shipped to my location at a more reasonable cost.
The potential reasons to watch an item are nearly infinite.

Go ahead, you're not going to buy it. All I asked was why there were many watchers and no buyers, that's all. "I like that! I'll watch it!"
I don't watch items. I buy them.

And yes, it's a problem because you're hardly buying anything.

I think they are real people but many of them are not buyers.

Could also be more and more people are being convinced they are in fact robots by issues with Captcha.

Another condescending bouche. So because you are not a bot, that proves Ebay doesn't use them for giving false confidence to sellers? You would be a great lawyer. Did you ever think maybe the OP has a vision problem or do you just like being a dicktator?

I think eBay arbitrarily adds buffer numbers to certain things like views and watches to hid what the real numbers in those areas may signify should they get out.
Think rationally here. By what explanation can sales go from one item selling 50 a week to nothing for two. OR for that matter your store having lulls that literally could only be explained by changes eBay made that they wont acknowledge or admit to or The walking dead is actively going on outside your home and the internet stopped working for a week.
We all sit around pondering what the hell is going on. eBay knows if your able to see real-time views you'll be a terror when they screw stuff up daily.
Just ignore the cheerleaders paid to be a part of our lives around here.

your watching 1000 items huh
I cant even sus out the extreme ridiculousness of that statement. I didnt even read the rest. Nor do you have time to read them. Go back to what and how every you manage your daily lives wish/want life. Holy moly.

Thats the truth and I'd say the proof really that the numbers are false and not accurate in their truest sense.
Logic says the more activity, the more exposure = more sales. More watchers, more view are certain points that when laid out on a line of data point should be somewhat consistent to more sales. At least higher sales potential. Whether that is a quicker sales curve, higher-margin option or what have you. It stands to reason over time those numbers should mean something.
Simply answer and most appropriate comes from Kathieskorner, " I've never seen any real correlation between watchers and sales. "
Me either and I dont like it.
