5 Month Old Sale - Customer Says Item Defective

Hi all.

I was just contacted by a customer who bought a $720 electronic item from me exactly 5 months ago. This is what he sent me:

---------------------------

Good morning. I purchased this item from you in June. Unfortunately it sat for a few months waiting for the job to progress. Last week we attempted to deploy it finally and it will not power up. Either through poe or 24vdc. I know we are technically outside of the return window but I am contacting you to see if you may have another one to exchange this with. Either this unit was shipped as a DOA or it was zapped in its travels. Either way we are stuck with a brick currently. Please advise. Thank you in advance.

For all I know, he's been using this item for months. On the other hand, I feel bad thinking I may have sold him a defective item.

I guess what I'm asking is, what would you do?

Thanks.

@zaraspooky

The 30 day money back guarantee has since expired.  You really don't have to reply.  However, they could do a chargeback on their credit card/Paypal and unfortunately they'll get their money back and most likely keep the gaming device as well.  This is one of the downsides of selling on line.  Sorry.

I'd tell the person his request is several months late. No exchange or refund can be provided.

and after the OP does that, he needs to block him also.

Dear buyer,

As you stated and understand, your request is 4 months beyond ebay's MBG timeframe and the return period.

The item was sent in June and should have been tested within a month of the receipt even if you weren't ready to use it regularly.

You may be able to get it fixed at a repair shop but since I don't have another to send and can't even access the listing from months ago, there's nothing I can do at this point.

For future ebay purchases, please verify that they work within the return period.

Sincerely,

Seller

It's unknown whether the item was defective but after this amount of time, you owe him nothing. And I wouldn't worry about a chargeback. Buyer clearly is aware that he's way outside his claim period. I think he's just submitting a "Hail Mary" because he has nothing to lose.

Thanks all.

I nicely let them know that they're not getting a refund. They seemed to understand and take it well.

We'll see...
