I think it is very courageous of eBay to go after the myriad of grandmothers selling over $600 in annual sales. Wait until the effects of what eBay is doing hits Wall Street, the 10% drop this week will seem insignificant.

"eBay" is going after no one.
eBay is complying with the "laws of the land"
eBay, and many other entities are required to comply with the new rules set forth in March of 2021.
Some states already had low reporting threshold requirements already in place.
Beyond that, the only thing that has changed is the 1099-K threshold. The laws for reporting income have not changed.

It's not "ebay" - it's ALL online selling and payment processing platforms for goods & services in the U.S. It passed via Congress in 2021 and signed into law by the president in March of 2021 as part of a "recovery act."
But I see what you're saying. Garage sales, flea markets or the landfill with your items!

@bearmtnbob
It isn't Ebay that's doing it.
It's the wonderful president you have now that did it.
If you been reporting your income like you were supposed to be doing, it shouldn't make any difference.

You made a mistake. Talk to your government leaders if you think it is unfair. Ebay has nothing to do with it. In fact Ebay MUST report or someone goes to jail.

What makes you believe eBay is going after anyone?
02-01-2022 01:37 PM
Interesting how you choose to blame eBay instead of the party directly responsible, i.e. our own government.... You honestly believe eBay has the power to create new Federal Laws which govern all 50 states? SMH....

I would have to agree with you on this one there is NO WAY eBay wanted the additional headaches of having to deal with the generation of all those additional 1099's. This may also backfire on the politicians who believe there are billions of dollars to be had as a result of this change. There are provisions in the federal budget in the billions to beef up the IRS to handle all the additional workload. Frankly I will be surprised if the government manages to break even on this folly.

The lowered rate was passed in the last administration, not this one.

Wasn't it included in Biden's American Rescue Plan.

Yes it was. Ironically during a divided administration. Democrats controlled the Senate, Republicans controlled the house. The bill did not make it to the president until 2021. It's really hard to point the finger at one person or one party they all voted on it and the majority passed it but it was Biden that signed the American Rescue Plan Act in March of 2021.

This is straight INCORRECT.
The Trump admin did away with the hobby deduction in 2018. The Democratic led Congress and Biden sign this new 1099K trigger amount in March of 2021.
Facts are facts.

Yes it was. They just don't want to take the blame.

How is that? There's no blame to pass around - people should have been reporting taxes anyway. As has been the case through both administrations. Now we have a piece of paper and some people are simply going to have to pony up and do the right thing. Big whoop.

I agree.
People freaking out over a piece of paper.
If they had been reporting their income all along, they wouldn't have anything to worry about.
