I'm based in the US and have had an eBay account, as a buyer and seller, for 20 years. My account has an excellent reputation with a feedback score of almost 500. I've never had ANY disputes or problems, no funds ever held, nothing wrong. Basically a stellar account.
I've been a buyer in the last few years but haven't sold anything with eBay in several years, so I'm not part of the new Managed Payments system yet. I reviewed my account info and saw that eBay had an old address and phone number. I updated the information on my Account page. Then I created a new listing, and eBay wanted to verify my info. Okay, no problem.
When asked to verify my phone number (with a call or text), I got the error message: "Something went wrong. Check everything is right below." Well, everything IS correct!!! Country is US. It doesn't matter whether I ask for a call or a text, it gives the error. I tried changing the number from my cell to my analog landline. I tried changing the format of my input to include or exclude dashes or parenthesis. It didn't matter what I did, I still got the same error. These are legitimate regular phone numbers, not Google voice or anything weird or virtual.
I used several different browsers (Safari, Chrome, Firefox), clearing my browser cache, incognito mode, using the eBay app on my phone, even using a different computer. It didn't matter what I did, I got the same exact error no matter what phone number I tried to verify.
I reached out to eBay several time by phone and via Facebook message. I am getting nowhere. On FB, the eBay rep I messaged told me to call the Payments people. I called them and they told me to do all the things I have already done which don't work. The error is clearly on eBay's side. The reps keep telling me that they will escalate the problem to their tech team. And days go by. And weeks go by. And nothing happens. So I'm stuck. I can't sell anything because I can't get past the first step of verifying my phone number. And BTW, my phone number IS ALREADY SHOWING AS HAVING BEEN VERIFIED ON MY ACCOUNT PAGE, so this shouldn't be a problem!!!
Their only suggestion is for me to try creating a new account. Well, I don't want to do that. I have an excellent feedback score and longtime reputation, and I'll totally lose it if I create a new account. The reps told me that they could not transfer my feedback score to a newly created account. Who would buy from me (or sell to me) with a new account and a feedback score of zero????
I understand that eBay switched to Managed Payments a few years ago and have to re-verify everything. I don't have a problem with that. But I can't get past the "verify your phone number" part! I'm totally stuck at that step.
Has anyone else been experiencing this stupid run-around? I'm about ready to give up and just sell my stuff someplace else. Obviously eBay doesn't care about its longtime members. Good thing I'm not relying on eBay for my livelihood!

Can anyone help @canyonheathmom with this?
Hi @popblox! Thanks for tagging us. I don't see a selling account on @canyonheathmom's eBay account if that is the one they're referring too. If it wasn't used for a while and had old contact info registered to it, they most likely need to reverify things with our account safety team.
I would encourage them to go here and if a chat box pops up, choose 'See more' > 'Contact an agent'. If they end up calling support and getting the general menu, then they should follow the steps I’m providing below. They could vary a little but should generally follow that flow and if “Account Security” doesn’t work for step three, they can try “Account takeover” or “Hacked account”:
Hopefully once everything is verified and up to date, they'll be able to list an item for sale and set up their payments account to get paid out.

I have absolutely the same (or very similiar problem). I'm getting something went wrong message all the time when i want to delete my previous bank account and replace it with a new one, although the bank numbers are all correct. On second step they 're asking me about the verification through phone because 'it seems i have signed from a different computer' (although it's a complete nonsense as I am using the same PC for the past 5 years) and when i get the code through a text, the message something went wrong is poping out.

Hi @smallaudiomanufacture! That would be something you would want to discuss with the payment team since it's directly related to payments, given you're trying to update bank account info. The easiest way to get in touch is by going to the Payments section of your Seller Hub and clicking the floating box you see to the right of the screen. If that's not there for some reason, you can also go here and scroll to the very bottom of the screen.

Can you PLEASE, PLEASE check why ebay is not able to verify my bussines account? I have uploaded everything - bank statements, ID's, bank account info, everything and I'm still getting mail that i need to provide further documentation. I have checked everything and I'm sure that all of my info are correct. Can you please check if there's a missmatch somewhere (as I can not determine it). Just PLEASE don't send me to chat with algorithms and robots, I really want a real human being to solve this!
Thank you

velvet@ebay I haven't sold on eBay in several years, so it's not seeing that I even had a selling account previously.
As I stated in my first post, I cannot get past the first step of verifying my phone number. It throws an error every time, no matter what I do. So I am stuck at that first step.
I have contacted your phone support several times and none of their suggestions work. I have also contacted your support via Facebook message. They give me the same suggestions, which do not work. There is an error on eBay's end that needs to be fixed.

Hey people, please do not hijack my thread with other problems! Please write to velvet@ebay in a separate thread of your own! Thanks for understanding!
@smallaudiomanufacture as well as anyone else. Thank you.

@canyonheathmom, if you're able to post in this forum, you are technically "logged in to eBay", so you should be able to open your seller hub. I know you can't, I just think we need to figure out exactly when the problem starts.
It might be helpful if you post a screenshot of the exact screen where you're receiving the error. First click on "eBay" from this page, at the top left, then let us know at exactly which point you're prompted to enter your phone number.

I go to my Account page.
It prompts me to update my credit card. I click on the link ("update"). It takes me here, to a page saying that I don't have a seller account (even though I did, previously):
I click on "create a seller's account." It takes me here to sign-in:
I sign in successfully. It takes me to the phone verification page:
(I pixelated the last 4 digits of my phone number). The information on this page is correct. When I "edit" to see the info, it shows my country is the US, and my phone number is the correct 10-digit number, starting with my area code (no leading number 1). This is a regular cell number. It is not a virtual number. Whether I click on Call me or Text Me, it gives me this error:
If I edit the phone number to my analog landline and tell it to call me, it still gives me this error. If I edit it to other phone numbers (my husband's, my daughter's cell numbers) it gives this error. There is no escaping this error. I cannot proceed past this step.
You should note that the phone number ending with "47" on my account HAS ALREADY BEEN VERIFIED BY YOUR SYSTEM IN THE ACCOUNT SETTINGS. There is no reason why it shouldn't be able to verify it on this page.
Because I can't get past the phone number verification, I can't move on to any other steps, and I can't re-open my seller's account.

There's been a ton of issues with old selling accounts getting hijacked by scammers, so there's just several added layers of security that you're having to deal with. What happens if you click on "Need help?" at this screen (before you get to that sign-in prompt)?
09-28-2021 07:32 PM
If I click on Need Help it brings me to the customer service page. But I have looked a bunch of those articles and they don't address my situation. If I contact you guys, I get the same suggestions about using a different phone number, using an Incognito window, clearing my browser cache, using a different device, using a different browser, rebooting my computer -- none of those work. I have tried them all and I still get the same error. Even on the eBay iphone app.

I realize you're frustrated and have been going around in circles on this, but I think the problem is you haven't got to the right person. I know you've tried calling, but what happens when you follow the above instructions? Have you been able to use the chat option?
09-28-2021 09:44 PM
I haven't tried the chat, but if you think it would help, I will try it. I did chat with reps on Facebook and Twitter, but not on eBay.

Since it looks like you're in your account @canyonheathmom, I think you resolved any account security issues that may have been there. I'm not sure what would be blocking you at this point, so I've filed a ticket with our tech team and hopefully they can figure out what is causing this block during the registration/selling process.
I'll follow-up with you here once I have news from them to share. Thanks for your patience and desire to sell on eBay, hopefully we can make that happen for you sooner than later.

No, my issue isn't resolved. I have been busy and didn't have time for this. I tried just now to follow the instructions but there are no agents available at this hour.
