0% feedback buyer wants me to correct their apartment number

A new account bought something from me and then sent a private message telling me to correct their apartment number from 1 to E1. All seems plausible, right? However I have a feeling I should just cancel the order and tell them they need to correct their shipping address. Am I right? Or, am I still OK with correcting the apartment number because the buyer asked me to?

Hi @e-cyclers-of-idaho2021

You can message them and let them know you lose your Seller protection if you change the address so they can message you back and request a cancellation so they can update their address then purchase the item.

While eBay does allow Sellers to make a change like it is NOT advisable

If you cancel with no communication with the Buyer it might tick them off so you would need to add them to your blocked list if you do that ... you would use the reason "Problem with address" if that is the route you take.

The only thing I'm aware of is changing any part of the address could leave you open to nefarious individuals.  If this was a long time customer, I would be less hesitant.  I would cancel and have the buyer correct the address.

It may seem mundane to the buyer but you have to CYA.

Cancel the transaction with problem with the buyer's address.  Tell the buyer to  make the correction on ebay.  Then they can re-buy the item and when they pay, they need to make sure that everything is correct. If not, they need to fix the error.  Do NOT ship the item especially if it's a pricey item.  This could be a scam.  Perhaps  it gets delivered anyway whether you write apt. 1 or E1.  Who knows but don't risk it if it's a pricey item.

It's true that if eBay knows you changed the address, you could lose your seller protection against a fake "Item not received" claim.

But eBay won't know if you print out the label as-is and then get our your Sharpie and change the "1" to "E1".

No, it doesnt work this way.  At best, naive new ebayer, at worst its a scam.

Cancel the order, problem with address.

Tell them they can reorder once they change their address information.

If they don't wind up reordering, block them.

FYI: I have found that when you cancel a sale because the buyer wants to change the address, ask them to correct the address and re-purchase the item ... about 50% of the time you never hear from them again.  They do not go through with the re-purchase.

Plus you are not changing the street address - only the apartment number - and apartments in that building are probably going to ALL have letter prefixes or ALL do not. It is not going to be a mix. Plus even if both Apt. 1 and Apt. E1 existed within the same building - someone in Apt. E1 would have no knowledge of what Apt. 1 ordered.

I would just fix the apartment number and ship it out. Street addresses are not looked at in an Item Not Received dispute - and you are not changing the street address anyway.

Hi everyone, I'm back!

This is an interesting mix of replies. The item sold for only $60.  Not super cheap but not really expensive either. I am tempted to just correct the apartment number on the label. However, I think I'm going to play it safe and cancel the order due to the address issue.

I have a tangentially related question... a while ago I had a couple orders where I shipped by UPS but the buyer's address wasn't acceptable because they had a PO Box number before their street address. So, I just edited out the PO Box line. Was that not so good? I had no issues with the buyers.
