I've attempted to use the 'upload tool' (excel) in the past, but could not get it to work.
Is there a way to download a few of my current auctions in that format?
Or is there a better external tool I should just pay for? I've spent a lot of time, but no results.

Did you get your Excel upload working?
My recommendation is to go to the Uploads page and download an XSLX template for your category. Then you will have droplists of values for each field. Those droplists will ensure that most of your cell data is within the proper scope for each field.
If you download a CSV template for your category, you won't have the benefit of droplist suggestions. That is likely where wrong data types can make things difficult.
If you need to pursue this in greater detail, I would recommend that you post your question on the "Seller Tools" forum:

I could never get it to work.. I'm not sure why Ebay doesn't allow you to download the current auctions in that format.
