I dropped off 2 return packages at USPS a couple days ago and both were scanned at the self service kiosk and got a receipt. The counter clerks refuse to scan packages and always tell us to scan at the kiosk, but the kiosk receipts aren't really proof of drop-off and there's a disclaimer "the scan is not a delivery or service guarantee". After scanning the labels, I dropped one of the packages in the kiosk dropbox (and filmed it as proof showing the label on the package). I couldn't fit the other package in the dropbox so I left that at the counter. That evening I saw the counter package was scanned at the distribution center but the dropbox package hadn't been scanned. It's been 2 days now and the dropbox package still just shows that it's only been scanned at a kiosk but no movement.
I'm worried because it's a $650 smartphone return, which I'm returning because it was defective. I know it's only been 2 days and USPS sometimes doesn't scan until it's been delivered. I'm just worried because I dropped off 2 packages at the PO on the same day yet only the package I left at the counter shows real time updates, while the dropbox package shows no updates. I can't inquire "missing mail" with USPS until 3 more days, but will do that once I'm able to.
What would happen if USPS loses the package or they never update the status? The return label was paid by the seller if that matters. After reading through different forums, it sounds like I'd still get a refund through the eBay Money Back Guarantee since the item was defective. I also paid with Amex via PayPal, but not sure if I have any protection with Amex or PayPal regarding lost returns.
