First time I have had to use this so sorry if I'm a bit slow . I sold a watch a few weeks ago and for one reason or another the guy returned it to me after eBay stepped in . when I got the watch back the strap was damaged , which was not the reason for the return . The guy is due a full refund but I think I should be able to claim some back for the repair / replacement strap . Is this the case and how would I go about it ? tried the help section but I keep going around in circles . Any help would be appreciated .

If the buyer opened a return case and "eBay stepped in" as you say, please explain what you mean by eBay stepped in.
Do you mean that eBay accepted the return and then refunded the buyer on your behalf?
If so, you are lucky to have the item back in your possession.
Only Top Rated Sellers that allow 30-day returns are able to deduct from a refund for a buyer sending back something damaged.
Provide more information if you can.

Thanks for replying , yes you are right eBay stepped in and the buyer was given a full refund . When the item (a watch) was returned the strap was in a very poor state compared to when I sent it out . i have got 100% feedback but I have only sold 7 items so I don't think I am classed as a Top Rated Seller . Thank you for your help but sounds like I am going to have no luck with this one .

@nigelbastable You are lucky you got the watch back at all.
Since eBay stepped in you also got a defect on your selling account and didnt get refunded your FVF.
Never let eBay step in.
Top Rated has nothing to do with Feedback.
You should read about it and read the MBG.
In this case you cannot do anything except be grateful you got the item back.
Most of the time you let eBay step in the buyer gets the item and a full refund.

I don't see any recent sold items, but if you want the 'refund reduction' protection (without being TRS), you can offer Free Returns on your listings. It works exactly as it does for TRS with 30-Day (or better) Returns.

I did not know that a seller did not have to be a TRS to be able to deduct the 50%.

Tis true.
https://export.ebay.com/en/seller-performance/transactions/how-returns-work/
"Top Rated Sellers and sellers who offer free returns can now offer partial refunds, up to 50%, if the item is returned in a condition different than when you shipped it."
There's another link somewhere that suggests up to 15% for items returned with tags missing or original packaging opened but I forgot to save it.

Do that a few more times and you won't have to worry about ebay refunds anymore
