Hi there,
I recently made a 5 hour round trip to collect an item which was sold as 'used working' and the seller assured me it was working fine. I was met outside the address and not given an opportunity to test it, but again he assured me he'd just tested it and it worked.
After getting it home I've tested it and found multiple problems with it. Initially the seller offered to refund me and let me keep the item - he has since recanted on this and wants the item returned.
My question is - how can a large collection only item be returned when no packaging was given and I don't have anything to package it up with? The best I'd have is black sacks around it with the label stuck on, this would almost certainly result in it getting broken during transit.
I've suggested they come and collect it as I'm not paying for the fuel again, nor do I have the time to make the trip.
Any help is appreciated - I contacted ebay by phone but they haven't really been clear about who's responsible for providing packaging for a return which was collection only.

If you want to ship it back, you'll have to find the packaging.
Start the return, then and see what the seller wants to do.
Go to your purchase history and click return item and select, the item doesn't match the description as the reason.
The seller will have 3 days to accept the return and pay return shipping or refund without returning.
If they don't, return to the case on day 4 and ask Ebay to step in.

The rules may be different in the UK, but in the US you would do as @kensgiftshop says, you start the return and make sure to select item doesn't match the description.
From what I understand in the US, you cannot do a local delivery of a returned item anyway, the seller cannot pick up a returned item, you have to have a trackable method for eBay to know it got back to the seller. The seller would be responsible for the shipping, but you would have to coordinate with them to give package size and dimensions. If you pack it carelessly, and it is damaged in transit, don't expect a refund.
It might help if you stated what the item was.......I can't advise you on packing a refrigerator but someone may have an idea on how to pack an item if you tell us what it was.
