Can anyone explains eBay's ludicrous logic of giving a month for a return to be shipped back?   The return was accepted by eBay without my input.  Which I feel is 100% false, and now they have 29 days to ship back.  What logic is this?  If it can be called logic.

It’s to give buyers and sellers the opportunity to work things out. And to give buyers time to ship the item back. 
This is eBays sandbox, their rules. It is what it is.

You have a 30 day return policy. 

 

When sellers have a return policy and a buyer requests a return, it's accepted automatically. You cannot deny a return! 

 

And they have 30 days to open that return request per your own policy that you set!

Ebay's logic of giving a month for a return is because YOU allow a 30 day return policy! 

 

You ask: "The return was accepted by eBay without my input. "
What kind of "input" do you want to give? You can't deny the return because with a return policy, the buyer can return for any reason or for no reason! You have no input when you accept returns.

I had a prior return with MY 30 day policy that the buyer had 7 days to return.  That seemed logical.  The buyer had purchased.  Received and opened the return as there was "buyers remorse"  They just "changed mind".  Less time had passed than the current.   That return I had the opportunity to accept or dispute the return, it wasn't automatically accepted by eBay.  But this return is completely different.

Sorry @somethingneat  but @albertabrightalberta is correct.  You do seem to offer a 30 day return which means that a buyer can return the item within a 30 day period for any reason.  Now, if it is buyer's remorse (didn't like it, changed their mind) they, the buyer should be paying the postage for the item being returned.

If the item is being returned due to "item not as described" or "defective/damaged etc..." then the seller is on the hook for the return postage.

 

Even if you do not offer a 30 day return, a buyer can still return an item for things like "item not as described" or "defective/damaged etc..."  Even if they lie about it.  It's the cost/risk of doing sales online.

Sorry, but you and Albert Rose have it backwards. The OP is questioning

- the timeline of 29 days after a return has already started,

- not the 30 days before starting a return.

 

Can someone answer that? It's not the pandemic, as it was already 15 business days before the pandemic, and a buyer still has 15 business days now, in current policy, to drop their return label in the mail.

Apparently, a seller's return policy does affect the timeline in which a buyer has to return the item.

 

I recently had to return a defective (non-working) item to a seller and the seller had a 14 day return policy and I had exactly 14 days from the time that I started the return process, see the 2 pics below:

Regardless a 14-, 30-, or 60-day return policy

-- eBay always tells a buyer they have 10 business days (14 days, plus holidays) to ship the item back.

 

It's a holdover from the previous presentation of the very same policy:

As Velvet Olsen has explained, eBay just simplilied the two durations into one, in the current incantation.

@somethingneat   preaching to the choir here. my buyer opened a remorse return case 12/20 and i authorized an ebay return shipping label the same day. Ebay is giving the buyer until Jan 12 to return the item 🙄

I'm pretty sure this was something they put in place during the height of covid, to give buyers more time to send a return back, as a fast trip to the post office was not as simple.

 

I think it is more than past time for ebay to put that window back down to what it was pre covid
