I received an item back wherein the buyer paid for the return shipping.
I'd like to know how I can, also, include the amount paid for that return shipping with the refund.
or, in other words
How do you make a refund greater than what was collected by Ebay?
No formal return request was ever made...
they thought they were beyond the date to make the request.

If you did this through messages, the easiest option would have been to either tell the buyer to file a return or to provide a prepaid return label purchased at pirateship.com or any other postage site.
Since we're past that, the short answer is you cannot refund the buyer more than they paid. If you want to reimburse them for postage you can agree on an online payment method to send funds like PayPal, Zelle, Venmo, etc - or you can old school it and mail them some cash or a check since you have their address.
