Earlier this week, I purchased an item from China that was going to arrive some time between the beginning of September and end of October. I was ok with that. I paid for the item and received an order confirmation. No problems.
On August 5, the seller sent me a message listing temporary shipping issues involving the item I purchased and asked if they can refund the purchase. I answered to confirm the refund and thanked them for the immediate notice.
Today, eBay sends me a notice that the return is complete and the refund is being processed. I also read the reason given for the order cancellation is: "Buyer asked to cancel the item in this order".
That's not true and gives a false representation of the matter. The seller contacted me. I confirmed out of courtesy and necessity. If I hadn't, I'd most likely be out an item and money.
I know, in the scheme of things, it's not a big deal, but for me, it's the principle of the matter. Right, wrong, or otherwise, everything should be correct.
Should I leave it as is or should I contact eBay and have them resolve the reason listed?

The seller is trying to avoid a defect against his account, and by asking if you would like to cancel for a refund and you agreeing it sort of slips into a little bit of a grey area as to whether or not they have broken protocol. I would assume stock they were expecting had not arrived and did not want to cancel using the OOS option.
I would leave it, but if you want to report the seller you can, but I don't think you are being fair jumping to the conclusion that you would have been out your item and the money had you not agreed.
Totally your decision

There are very few reasons for the seller to select when canceling an order. I've used the 'buyer requested to cancel' reason numerous times as have other sellers. Its no big deal, let the guy be.

so you have used an untruthful reason numerous time canceling and its no big deal
it just goes to show that lying is an accepted prcatice and your OK with it
the OP does not really want to cause a fuss over soemthing as trivial as this but just because everyone else lies does not make it OK at all
sellers that abuse the cancel button are just plain abusive

eBay should be informed the seller asked you if they could refund because they were having temporary shipping issues involving the item, that you only agreed to the refund they offered because they couldn't ship the item, that you did not have a change of heart and asked the seller to cancel. Shipping issues = can't ship because it's out of stock.
Sellers should not deceive eBay to avoid a defect. You're not a good seller if you do that to avoid a defect and you don't deserve the benefits good sellers get.
I'm wondering why are you buying items that take 3 months to deliver? ePacket takes 7-15 days and EMS is faster. SLOW sea shipping takes 15-40 days. It sounds like you're buying from a seller who doesn't have the item and when they place an order with their distributor the distributor orders it from the manufacturer. Because I can't think of any other explanation why shipping should take 90 days. They aren't putting it in the mail for 6 weeks because they don't have the item in their warehouse where they have direct control over the item

Big surprise. eBay makes a rule. People find a work around.
Kind of situation FB was designed to address. If the buyer is fine with the transaction being canceled, does the reason matter should a defect be attached to to the seller?
If the buyer didn't like leave a negative or a neutral.
Another example of eBay being to deep into people's business. Let the market work openly. This seller cancels to many orders, buyers get upset, negative FB grows, either buyer changes behavior or goes away.

"I answered to confirm the refund"
That is what they wanted,
and why they can cancel at your request.

It's not if the buyer is fine with the cancellation the seller shouldn't get a defect. It is eBay is not fine with sellers that don't ship after receiving payment. eBay wants to know how sellers are performing.
The buyer of course wanted the item they purchased and has to be fine with a refund forced on them. Of course they're going to say yeah give me my money back so I can buy it elsewhere.
If you think eBay isn't keeping tabs a seller that offers returns can get in trouble if eBay thinks they have too many remorse return requests.

A seller did this to me one time when I didn't know any better. I bought a lot of 4 CDs and they replied they could find only 2 of them (other two were technically OOS) and asked if I wanted just the 2 they found, or would I prefer them to cancel the order? I did not want just the two they found, I was actually wanting the 2 in the lot that they did not have, so I agreed to cancel the order. I got the message with reason: "Buyer requested to cancel."
I let it go... Then, I went through all my listed items and made sure I knew where they all were, ha-ha-ha.

The seller should have used the out of stock as a reason for the cancellation. If you want to, you can report the seller at the following link...

I guess I’ve just experienced something similar in that after buying an item before the weekend I find eBay messages this morning, Monday, saying the order was cancelled on Sunday at my request and a refund was on its way. No idea what’s going on, I didn’t cancel the order and I can go and buy the item again from the seller as there appears to be plenty available according to the listing.
The message says that eBay advised the seller that I wanted to cancel the order which I didn’t do. It’s annoying and there’s no way to follow up with eBay to find out how this was initiated. Do I just repurchase the item now or if somehow that situation was initiated by the seller avoid them and buy elsewhere?
