I sent the wrong item, How to proceed?

I had an auction for a lot that  (I have several similar ones of and ) I sent the wrong lot.

I was gong to refund his money ask him to return the other and just send him out the other.  

I'm not sure if that's the best way to go as I ve been reading different ways to do this on ebay.

The official eBay way is to have them file an item not as described case and you issue a paid return label. You then send the correct items when you receive the others back.

I'm with @simba6, but another way of handling it would be to do a package intercept. Although those cost more than your return shipping cost would...

I usually let buyer keep wrong item and refund them first....to save my feedback.

Or send correct item and let them keep wrong item...never know what a buyer will say in feedback.

Well this has become complicated 

I told the buyer to ask for a replacement  

he filed item not received I called eBay he helped me send him return postage and told me I should wait for the return item to be shipped before sending out the right item , 

I may just send it out and hope he returns the original . 

this is vintage Boy Scout merit badge w sashes so I do want the other 2 back. 
eBay saw the messages between us so knows he misunderstood the directions.

What I have done is to go to "order" and use the dropdown to purchase another label when I want to send more.

Did that not long ago. Sent buyer set of 2. They said one was defective. I got another label, and sent the replacement of one with the new weight and dimensions.

No case was opened. Just message from buyer.

agree because when you get the return you have to refund them, thats fine but what if you already sent correct item? you cant also refund. Ebay please fix this.
