How to issue a bigger refund amount than value of purchase

I had a buyer return an item without going through ebay's system. They just sent it back and paid for shipping themselves. It was a fairly cheap item and they only paid a little over $3 to ship it back. I tried to refund for the purchase price plus their shipping cost, but the refund form says "invalid amount" because it is more than the purchase price. How can I refund for the amount I want?

Through eBay, you can't refund more than the sale amount. If you feel compelled to cover the buyer's return shipping, you can send the funds through PayPal. Since you have had a transaction, it'd be okay to get the buyer's email... which you'll need. Good luck.

Hi @leareamc ,

Unfortunately you can not refund more then the original purchase price, paid shipping, etc.  You might consider explaining that to them and let them know that in the future they should consider eBays return claim process and that in some instances a pre paid shipping label is provided.
