I recently sold a gold necklace to a sus buyer with private feedback.
As soon as they bought the necklace I contacted Ebay via chat and let them know my concerns.
They assured me everything was good and that I should ship the gold so I did.
Today they received it and opened a return stating it was not the size I stated.
I know for a fact the size is correct because I measured it and I also purchased it on Ebay in 2020(same size).
How can I protect myself as a seller from scammer buyers returning junk instead of the item I sent?
Should I have my local police open the box and document the contents? At this point since I already caught the buyer in a lie, I am expecting a fraudulent return as well. I contacted ebay via chat today and was told to not refund the money if they scam me and that I can appeal it but I know how that goes. Any suggestions?

Nothing but bad news honestly, the buyer can send you anything or nothing back and you'll refund in full. However, after that happens you can file a police report in your county, the buyers county if applicable and a postal fraud case. Then you can appeal the return and provide that information in your eBay, that should net you a win albeit without your item most likely. Then you have to worry about the buyer filing a chargeback.... Honestly I would never sell jewelry on here, I sell tech but not over $500 unless I have too. I prefer under 300 though...

You don't.
Ebay is known as the easiest place on Earth to steal and with zero repercussions.
They want it that way....and all they will ever say is "the majority of transactions on ebay are fine"...that's it.
Sucks to be you, now take your beating and be quiet about it.

There really isn't a way that you can protect yourself from that. However, the majority of time the correct item does get returned so imo there is no point in worrying about something that 'might' happen.
