Fake Tracking

I had an issue with a seller who would not give me clear communication, and who provided a fake, expired tracking number from a foreign carrier.

To try to get my money back, I initiated a return, and the app forced me to provide tracking. I just typed “not received” in the box for the tracking, and now I can’t cancel the return to have eBay step in, because it took the placeholder and marked the item as shipped.

What can I do to get my money back?

OP returns exactly what was received, utilizing the seller prepaid return postage.

I'd advise not to close the case.  If ebay closes the case, THEN utilize your payment source.

Well, my mistake. It was a debit transaction of $500, so I guess I have to just keep hounding eBay

Since you don't have the options to open a case or a chargeback with PayPal or your card issuer, you need to come back to your return request after 3 business days, to click Ask eBay to step in. Then follow the advice from @justahamster above.

And don't contact your bank just yet @dw4769 because as soon as eBay hears that you've sneaked off to tell your bank, eBay will slam your return shut, that's eBay policy. Instead, wait for your return request to play out.

If you have a fake, expired tracking number that never gets delivered, you start an ITEM NOT RECEIVED case. You cannot get a refund by starting a return -- what have you received, to return?

But you cannot change the case now. Instead @dw4769 open an ITEM NOT RECEIVED case here at PayPal, or file an ITEM NOT RECEIVED chargeback with your card issuer.

If, as I understand it from your message, you did not receive your purchase, then "return" was the wrong kind of case for you to open.

You needed to open an item not received case.  You may have lost your chance to open that case with eBay as they usually only allow one case per transaction.

If you paid with Paypal, you have 180 days to open a case there.  Or you can do a chargeback on your credit card.

It seems like the OP has nothing to return if I'm interpreting his message correctly.

Well, my mistake. It was a debit transaction of $500, so I guess I have to just keep hounding eBay if they do close the case. I doubt my bank can do much for me from what I’ve heard, but I’ll notify them anyway. Thanks

If a seller fakes a tracking number, it is mail fraud and should report to postal inspection.

What I am curious about is if you can file a Item not as described and ship a empty box back for that kind of situation, would that work?

We can't SAY that.  But return what was received is always the best advice.
