Cancellation of item

I erroneously sold an item as 1 color when in fact it was another. I contacted buyer immediately to let them know and to offer my apologies. Should I cancel the order or should the buyer cancel the order? They haven't responded back to me yet about the mix up. I offered a 20% discount if they wanted to accept the different color. Still waiting on response from them.

Buyers cannot cancel, they can request to cancel, only sellers can cancel an order. 

 If you cancel you would need to select "out of stock". This will give you a defect, but if it's the only one you have it shouldn't affect your seller account.

When do you need to ship the item?  

 

If you have a couple of days, you might want to hang tight and wait for a reply.

 

If you are really pressed for time, the other thing you can do is to call the buyer (eBay provides a phone number for precisely problems such as the one you are experiencing) and discuss over the phone.  

 

You can ask their permission to cancel, and if they say yes, then select "buyer requested to cancel" from the drop down menu when cancelling the sale.

 

If you are unable to reach the buyer, enclose a note in the package informing the buyer of the mistake and offer to pay for return shipping.   Tell the buyer to file an "item not as described" and take it from there.

 

There may be other ways to handle this sort of snafu, but these are methods I have used in the past.

Ship the item and refund them 20% with a message in the package about returning if they do not want the different item you sent.

It is unfair to blame the buyer for the cancellation for your mistake.
