When a seller has wrong descriptions of the product is the buyer responsible for the return mailing, especially to China?

If you receive a product that is not as described in the ad, then you open up a Money Back Guarantee claim with eBay ... you do not pay for return shipping.  Typically, buyers who try to resolve the issue by interacting directly with a seller in China have found that they are given the run-around, as sellers will string you along and give bad information until you lose your rights under the MBG program.

Returning defective items to China is confusing and has many points of failure, but here is the simple process:

  1. Find the item in your purchase history, and indicate that you want to return it.
  2. Indicate the return reason ... it seems that your reason will be "Doesn't match description or photos"
  3. Because this is a Money Back Guarantee claim, the seller MUST PAY FOR RETURN SHIPPING if the seller wants the item back.   The seller can provide you with a return shipping label.  Alternatively (and more risky), the seller can give you some money (e.g., through PayPal ) to cover the cost of shipping after you give the seller a quote ... the quote should be for shipping that has tracking all the way back to China ... it's MUCH MORE expensive to ship with tracking from USA to China than China to USA.
  4. If the seller refuses to accommodate the return shipping label, and many will not except for very expensive items, then escalate the MBG claim when you are able to get a full refund.

Do not close your return case for any reason before getting your refund, regardless of what the seller might tell you.

How do I escalate the MBG program?

In the return status and dialogue, there will be a link that says "Ask eBay to step in".  That will transform a return request into a case.
