I disabled javascript a few weeks ago, and it made my browser run much faster. It also made the browser stop crashing 5 times a day. I can also open 50 browsing tabs at a time, before, even 10 was a problem. I also don't get as many popup ads, and I no longer get issues with ad blocker detectors. In short, the web works much better without javascript. Ebay also used to work, but now I get this message. How do I use the old search method that worked just fine for years without javascript?

You can't unless you poke around by trial and error, and find an eBay search URL that supports the old way you saw, which is unlikely since when eBay changes code/functionality they usually abandon the old methods. I started seeing that 5 or more years ago.

What you have to do is not block JavaScript entirely. I assume you did it via your browser settings, and just turned all JS off. As much as I block JS, I don't see how you have been able to go much of anywhere that way - 3/4 of the web is completely non-functional with JS blocked completely.

As I'm typing this, I'm manually extracting file download links from page source for pages on sites I don't whitelist JS for - the sites are essentially blank pages because I have JS mostly or completely blocked for them, but what I want is buried in the raw code. Point is, it takes some work.

You need to be selectively blocking JS with something like the NoScript addon, I use it it all my browsers, and have it set to block just about everything by default. Critical scripts for sites like eBay are permitted on a whitelist basis in conjunction with other manual blocking and whitelisting rules in the Adblock Plus addon to create a filter system that allows mostly only what I permit. Yes, that method results in performance hit, but there really isn't any other way that I have found. Trade off performance and convenience for security and privacy.

One other thought is that spoofing browser agent might produce some results if you can fool eBay into thinking your browser is something else and has a non-JavaScript interface for that something else.

Thank you so much for the informative reply. I think it is clear by now, that javascript is mostly used for data mining, advertising and tracking purposes, which has no advantage to the users. A few dozen lines of script could be useful, but most useful stuff could be done server side. These "modern" frameworks are using all my cpu and using gigabytes of memory to execute. It's too much for my raspberry pi. Something like searching on ebay in no way needs to require javascript, so it's clear that their intentions are selfish. Maybe I should just not use ebay anymore, amazon seems to work. In any case, I like this noscript add on you describe, but I think we need some way to share the script blockers so that I don't have to rewrite all the rules just for ebay. We should be working together to undermine javascript!

"User experience" is the hot new buzzword among web designers. These kids are even calling themselves "UX engineers" now. What they really are is copy-and-paste script kiddies who don't know JavaScript from a hole in the ground.  If I were Ebay, I'd be sheepish about bringing up the user "experience" until I learned how to accept criticism and provide a decent one.

*uck ebay, i just spent 5 minutes typing a message, and this god **bleep** thing says authentication failed. The TLDR of that message, ebay SUCKS, they can't even get the basic stuff to work right without crashing all the time, and it's insecure, but they don't care, they just shovel more pretty **bleep** on top of it all to make a new search experience for all of the proper consumers. They are just going to keep doing this **bleep** as long as people keep paying for it. There are far better alternatives to ebay, i don't come here anymore unless i can't find something, it's just not worth the trouble anymore.
