Can delete messages, they then move to the "TRASH". Once there they just sit, can not permanently remove (or am I daft to the ways of the EBAY?)

eBay handles the deletion of old messages -- typically such messages removed after six months regardless of location.
Just think of the Trash as a handy spot to stash unwanted messages so you can organize your inbox.
